Post subject:  Garage Work Bench
OK, so I'm in my new house and need to start getting the garage squared away. I've got a space (pictured) that is 7 feet wide to put a work bench in. I'm looking for any good tricks you all have used over the years to make a sturdy bench and possibly wall storage to coincide with it. Materials, bench height, etc... I've got a switch that is behind the table that powers a socket on the ceiling for a light as well...thinking of using a hanging fluorescent. I also need to be able to get into the circuit breaker box seen and the AV box to the left side of the picture. Thanks, Ted.

Hey Ted,

You know I'm a home builder yet I prefer not to build my work benches and instead buy those nifty garage cabinet thingies. The ones I have now are from Target (I think!) and are sturdy and what I considered cheap. I think I paid about 150 bux but all I actually use it for is working on my R/C helicopters and planes. Might get some time on it fixing one of the kids toys but I prefer not to get it greasy. I use a board on saw horses for that so I'm not constantly putting my elbow in grease. But this is just me.

Another idea is to buy a pre-made bench from Sears. They have nice tall (36" tall!) heavy home and industrial benches cheap with nice big metal ball bearing drawers. Availible with a galvinized top or laminate one. Would last forever and have plenty of storage. Buy the time I build the draws from scratch and buy the heavy drawerslides I could have bought one ready to go.

Unless you just need/want a project! In that case go for broke!

Thanks Tom....nah, the Drak is not ready yet but getting close. Hopefully in the next few weeks we'll have them and be zipping through thw sand...you wanna come on out for the debut?

My Drak is still broken. I broke my original rear wheel hub, I replaced the other one about 3 yrs ago. Haven't even called Alain or taken the Drak off the trailer yet since I figured the riding season is/was over for the year.

I'll just expect many pictures and maybe some video.

In my opinion this is a great design for a bench. It has held over 700#. I used 4x4 posts on one bench I built. I've made 6 now, 2 for my self and rest for friends. They are cheap to build and very sturdy. If there is housing construction in the area, stop in and see if you can pick through the scrap pile. I made 2 benchs with free materials (got permision). I've just finished a 24x30 metal shop and will build a 3rd one, using a solid core door as a top.
