hi there, iv got myself a 400r, needs a bit of attention so i thought id go through it methodically. when i bought it i realised it was underpowered, so after checking the compression (100psi) it was obvious that there was a top end issue. so today i have took the head and cylinder off, its currently running a 42mm wiseco piston :( so after a few phonecalls and some lengthy chats i have now purchased a new standard 79mm piston and gasket kit. the cylinder is going to to be re lined on monday and the rebored to the piston size. while i was doing all this i got a bit carried away taking the front end of the pilot to bits (pictures to follow) it has beadlock rims on it, the a arms and wheels have been refurbed to average standard, but after closer inspection the it was obvious the front brakes need a refurb now (best order some more parts) thanks for looking. shaun |

Standard on a pilot is 80mm Where are you getting these numbers from? Are you sure the piston doesnt say 82mm? If so, your cylinder is maxed out. You can either put in another 82mm piston if the clearance is within spec, or you have to resleeve and get a 80mm piston. |

My phone won't upload them!! :-( It's definitely a pilot! And I know the cylinder is maxed out hence getting it re sleeved! I just was told that 79mm was the standard piston size?? On the wiseco site it stated that. 80mm was 1mm over bore!! ? Shaun! |

Just spent another hour pulling the old girl to pieces, roll cage is now off, cockpit completely stripped, Engine bay is starting to look bare (just motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) and fuel tank left). I'm slightly concerned about getting everything back together in the right place :-/ are the new bolt kits sold on eBay worth buying? I'd really like to treat her to some new joints?? They are junk. Use a bench grinder with a wire wheel and clean your hardware. Its easy and they clean up good |

Buy a metric thread chaser set and some thread/conventional oil and chase all the female threads. I used Harbor Freights' tap/die sets as chasers for steel threads. Crap is only good enough for virgin taps in soft steel and aluminum, but work great for chasing. Cheap, too. Then use a light wire wheel on the male threads. Stab the bolts into a USPS box so the heads stick out, and then sand blast & paint. Or you can clean bolts with the wire wheel one at a time. I made a "bolt tray" out of some expanded metal for p-coating bolt heads and oven-curing them, but haven't even unpacked it since I moved in November. Age and sand blast will probably take a little depth of surface coatings (i.e. zinc), so make sure you shoot them with some paint so they don't corrode. Stainless bolt kits look great and all, but they just don't get the job done like the factory bolts. Its purely bling-bling. Some of the factory bolts are higher grade for strength & safety (i.e. stronger steel, hardened, etc). And you have to use thread lube on all of the stainless so you don't get them stuck and break them off. |
