I got a 82 model a few weeks ago and rebuilt the reduction box and all bearings on wheels.
Ive been trying to get her running right for a day now and its not working too well. I kinda ran her into my vw bus in the process ( parking break was not on FML)

any help would be nice

she will not idle. Have to clean the spark plug really good every time you wanna crank her.

Oh My GOD!

Is the Bus OK? (Im a VW nut)

Sounds like she may be way too rich.

Remove the carb and disassemble it completely. Soak the carb in a good carb cleaner. After the soak, blow out ALL OF THE PASSAGES with compressed air.

Check to make sure the choke is completely closing after assembly.

We need pictures of the Ody and the Bus! Well I want to see the bus anyway! We all love pictures!

Yea that's probably it. The reduction box is completly rebuilt. We did that.
The carb is completely clean. Super clean we use a ultrasonic cleaner.
Gas tank is completely cleaned and lined with fluid resistant paint.
Steering tie rods are brand new all balls but i think there on backwards because the turn radius is terrible.
Compression is at 145. pretty decent

THis is my first 2 stroke my other honda is a Ct90 and my dad has a ct70 and atc70 all 4 stroke
looking for a 250r

oh man i love them. hondas are just way cheaper. Damn thing didnt even dent!!!!!!!!! the bus took a beating and flew off the jack and about 4 feet back

start her up and check for leaks in the seals with brake clean
just spray around the clutch seal crank seal intake and exhaust header

Holy Shit!

The Ody must have hit the Bus at full throttle to create that kind of damage!

And yes BS, I'm crying as I type this......Poor Bus!

Did you make sure all of the passages in the carb have been blown out with compressed air?
Are the jets clean and free of debris?

If you are having to clean the plug every time, I am betting its because its getting too much fuel. Is the choke closing completely?

Please post pictures of what the electrode of your spark plug looks like. By looking at the plug its possible to tell the condition of the burn and see if its too rich.

cant figure how she comes apart without a special puller.

That plug is showing signs of an extremely rich mixture.

Not meaning to step on anyone's toes but why are you wanting to change out you crank seals of they may not need to be changed.

Did you do a leakdown twst before you pulled the top end off?

This still looks to me that the Engine is getting way too much fuel which is causing the plug to oil foul. What are the sizes of the jest that are in the carb?

Well the case has been leaking out the clutch side.
I do not know the size of the jets offhand.

If she's been leaking then its time for a seal change. After you get the seal changed then you will need to do a leak down test. After you are sure she holds no more than 10 psi then you can start chasing down your rich running issues.

What altitude was the previous owner running the Ody at? It may be jetted for a higher altitude than what you are at.

By the looks of that plug, either the choke is not sealing off, it is jetted way too rich or there is a clogged air passage in the carb.

First thing to do is verify all jets etc are what they should be...NEVER ASSUME.
I've had many Odys,Pilots,been thru lots of diff hands,decades old.
Cleaning is mandatory,but cleaning incorrect internals will get ya no where real fast.
Did you check/set float level? This will determine the effectiveness of the jets,and the heart of the carb,
What fuel ratio?
You need to run it, to blow out the bottom end,sitting idleing,revving,will just load up the cases,and poss give too rich results.
Leak down test is also a given on any "just bought buggy"
Exhaust clean?
I'm outa air... :shock: :-)

I do believe you just about covered it Baz!

Never take anything for granted or the previous owners word for anything unless you know them well!

As an example, my Ody supposedly had only 10 hours on it. After tear down and inspection, it turned out to be more like 100 hours! :shock:

Um i would but that is the problem.... It will not idle at all. I have to hold the gas to keep it running.

the jets says m58

i was running yamalube with the stock 20:1 then tried 30:1

aftermarket dg pipe don't think it is clogged
don't have a clue how to set the float level. Im coming from a 1970 ct90. its a little different.

If you are having to hold the throttle open to keep it idling, that's a possible sign that your idle passages are clogged or the choke is not closing.

what one is the idle passage? the choke is closed
I think i need a different jet. I don't know what i need though

The idle passages are the small passages that are in the front (intake) side of the carb. It is very important that all of the passages in the carb are clear. Blow the passages out with carb cleaner using the small straw that comes with the can.

Make sure that all of the jets are clear.

Make sure your Air/Fuel screw is properly adjusted (approximately 2 full turn from bottomed out).

After that, blow the passages out with compressed air.

all my jets are clear. totally clear. that's not my problem. Its run the same when i first got it and now .
Its gotta be the leak on my crankcase. I cant get the fly wheel off to look at it thought. Im ordering a driven pully tool

The other thing was i would lose spark randomly so i think gas is getting into the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) unit from the case
