Post subject:  yet another oddy rebuild...

hello everyone
i bought my odyssey a few years(4) taking it out on every chance i had.....till someone ran it a bit lean (topped off gas with no oil mixture) and has been sitting in my yard since. but now im on a mission to get it going. as i started to see what was needed i found a deal i couldnt pass up on a jug and piston so i went ahead and purchased them. as i started inspecting the jug i noticed the exhaust had two broken bolts so now i don't know where to go from here ? should i try and take out the broken bolts or try and just fix the one i have any and all help would be appreciated

If the Engine was ran with no oil your lowerend will need rebuilding as well. The bolts can be removed with an easy-out.

Tip

BEFORE you EVER attempt to remove the bolts on the exhaust side of a air cooled Engine you ALWAYS have to take a hammer and a punch and beat the heads of the bolts really good you need to shock the threads to break the bond between the bolt threads and the threads in the cylinder OR you can just drill and tap hope you don't screw up the cylinder.

Whole bunch of FL350 CSI's for you to review http://www.pilotodyssey.com/PO/viewforum.php?f=26 Info you wont find in the manual :-)

I also suggest ditching the K&N style filter, they tend to let crap pass through. However, I have found that if you wrap them in oiled UNI foam and a few nylons, they work pretty goodl.

Take you time drilling that broken bolt out. I would try a left hand drill bit. Many times the combination of the heat generated while drilling, combined with the counter clockwise rotation of the bit will back the broken bolt out. Also when you center punch the broken bolt to start the drill the shock will help to loosen - like hoser was saying. Don't use to large a drill bit - you do not want to damage the threads. Soaking with PB Blaster for a couple days - then drilling, will also help.

Taking your time when dissembling the odyssey will save you many headaches down the road.

Last resort would be to drill the hole to the next size and tap them.

Ya, you can always drill them out and insert a heli-coil, too.

Pop that upper cage off (12 bolts) and its a hellova lot easier to work on her.
