Not wanting to totally hijack Hoser's 3D printing discussion I thought I would start a new project thread about making a FL350 intake manifold. Disclaimers - This is my 1st FL350 and I have never worked on one before. I am not sure what is stock and what isn't. I am not a mechanic/fabricator/machinist nor do I have too much experience working with 2-stroke engines but I am crazy enough to do things like this.
When I finally got around to looking at my carb setup a bit more closely, I saw that I already have an aftermarket intake manifold like in Hoser's pic. Since my rubber adapter attaching the carb to the manifold is cracked, all I need to do is get a new adapter. I believe I have a Mikuni 38mm flatslide carb as its made by Mikuni, has a flatslide butterfly, and the carb outlet ID is 38mm. I am going to get an adapter so I can get the thing back together. But I still want to try and make my own intake just to say I did it (I am still fascinated at making useful parts on a CNC mill) but also to see if I can get a better match between parts along the intake path.
So I ordered an Oddatv intake as soon as I got my oddy without knowing/looking at the intake setup. So I now have what I am assuming is a stock intake manifold setup. This has the carb offset to one side of the intake. I also have my current intake manifold where the carb is centered. There is a huge difference between the 2 manifolds in the shape of the backside where they mate to the reed cage. I am going to try and copy my current straight/centered intake. My retired machinist buddy has a foundry he uses in Stockton (about an hour away) to cast aluminum parts. I will probably just hack the manifold out of a block of aluminum and may also explore making a mold/pattern and having it cast (like mine is). I will try to maintain dimensions and angles that my intake has.
Here are my questions so far:
1. Is my reed cage intake shape stock?
2. Is the offset only needed in a stock setup?
3. Where is a good place to get the rubber carb adapter?
