got some polishing done. i also scored some pilot hubs im going to use. the splines are wrong for the shaft but i will build a adaptor and weld it in. the hub will have to be modified slightly.

ive been wanting a set of fenders for this project. but unfortunatly the dark side has the market cornered on replacements. i was very hesitant to purchase these but i went ahead anyway. poor coustomer service and way overcharged for the shipping. but the fenders look great. i cant wait to get them mounted and hack big holes in them for the shocks. with a gloss black powdercoated frame to match and lots of shiny parts. i think itll look pirty damn good. these are just kinda proped up to get the idea.

Fenders look nice.
My brother and I crash one of the machines almost every time we took them out. Fenders were always busted. Had a complete set welded at a local plastic shop after a crash. Cost $500. Now we don't run them anymore as they got busted again first ride after that, FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
Man you're sure putting a lot of effort into that machine.
Pic of finished product will be cool.
It might just be a trailer queen after all this.

Well this machine has had busted up fenders since I got it in about 97. And every other 350 I've gotten has had busted up fenders also. My pilot was the first one I got with good fenders. But this was my first 350 and I've put a lot of time and money into this project so I might as well make it as nice as possible.

Thanks man! It's been a long slow project. If I don't get to sidetracked ill get her done one of these days. I need to sit down and write up a list of stuff I'm stuck on that ether needs material or parts. That way I can prioritize and get back on track. Got the steering controller dropped off at the chrome shop. Im going to take all the hardware down and have it done also.

Finally got my shaft sent out for heat treatment. Now that its hard Im grinding the bearing surfaces to size. This is my first time using a tool post grinder. So we'll see how it comes out. So far so good

No longer am I a tool post grinder virgin! I had left them oversized about .020. Which proved to be too much to grind. Had to switch back to a carbide cutter and brought it within .004 then it did just fine. The finish could be a bit better but will work just fine for this application.

So what is the minimum buy & price to have some of these new shafts made? I'd buy 2 in a heartbeat.

Could open up the FL350R transmission & long-travel market, and get a ton of FL350's back on the trails. Plug-n-play axles would be so awesome, even if it did require a revised outer carrier. And you get a brand new axle for $60! Not a 30yr old beaten u-joint axle for $150 min.

Sometimes I feel like we need to setup a conservation area where Oddy's can live, play, procreate, etc. :-)

Well before I build too many. I'd like to see just how well it holds up. There's also another material ill probably switch to. Also the axles should work fine but other axles could be made to fit. At some point ill probably make them in small amounts. Just for other members. And all proceeds will go to the conservation of odysseys ( in my personal collection.)

Really nice job JK!

Tool post grinders are handy.

I ordered a stone facing bit. I'll build a tool and try that. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the finish. I just eyed it and got it close.

really nice job sir! I appreciate your talents, and this only helps out the forgotten 350 ody. I agree with Dmoney, these threads and builds only help the 350 ody get back where it needs to be, an mainstay in the atv world, these ingenious rear suspensions conversions to newer better built cv shafts, etc are a welcomed exciting new way to resurrect these machines from the back shed. WELL DONE!!

This gearbox still needs to be gone through. But I wanted to test fit the new shaft. Everything went together perfectly. The new rotor lines up properly with the caliper. No clearance issues with the cv cups.

Post subject:  Re: rotax 617 and long travel conversion

I think Ill consider making some for members. I doubt ill run a batch. Just for the time it takes to make just one. So it would be better to just make them a couple at a time. As needed. I'm also looking into making a broaching tool to cut the internal splines. If I can speed that up it will save a ton of time and bring the cost down.

Sweet dibbs lmao so they are the same length as the stock ones?

Author:  jknarfal [ Sun Mar 06, 2016 12:32 am ]
Post subject:  Re: rotax 617 and long travel conversion

These axles are longer then the stock axles. I believe the axle that D$ and methodical have been messing with. Will also fit this new output shaft. These use a 22 spline inner. So there may be several axle choices that can be used with this.

Really cool, great job.

Ive made a couple broaches and reamers, but its been many moons! I think it was 90-or 91.

I kinda knew what I was doing, but I worked with a master machinist, who really knew what he was doing!

If you can make this, you can make that! Especially if you have a heat treat guy already, that's the hard part.
