Hey everyone.First of all I am brand new to the group and brand new to owning a Honda, I would also like to say thanks in advance for any advice that could be provided to me as I am not very experienced but am trying to gain some knowledge here... Just bought what I have been told is an 81 fl250...never even seen one before but it was cheap and I saw it run so I picked it up!....wont idle, has the stock fuel tank mounted in the roll cage behind the drivers head with one fuel line gravity fed into the carb. To start it, needs full throttle and break to get it running and keep it running when stopped (if it starts at all). I have started with dismantling and thoroughly cleaning the carb (kehien) thinking this would be a good place to start. Didn't seem to help... I have seen the gravity setup online, but am reading lots about a fuel check valve, tee and something about a line going to the crankcase...this oddy has no fuel pump or any set up like the one people are discussing...can these things run gravity fed or do they need the fuel pump, check valve tee etc.?

Before you get into carb tuning and pump/gravity, you need to figure out...

[1] Does the Engine have any air leaks? Need a leakdown tester.
[2] What is the compression? Need a compression tester.
[3] What make/model carb, and what main & pilot jet sizes?

Pics of the project are always a plus, too! :-)

Ok DMoney....here goes.
1) I did a pressure test and found the Engine had a leak at the intake fitting, no gasket. So I made one, pressure tested again and found a significant leak at the crank shaft seal. Probably beyond my scope...if any one knows, could you rate the difficulty of this job in terms of a beginner?
2) Performed compression tests....results are as follows.
average number with throttle closed = 145psi. Average number with throttle wide open= 156psi....confused as to why the second number would be higher....never performed these tests before.
3) Keihin carb model # 092BASJ7 (A in this number has a box around it and the 7 looks like it could possibly be some type of Japanese character) pilot jet has #58 on it, main jet has #120...not sure what those numbers mean, but there they are.

Well judging by some of your answers here I can tell you are not completely mechanically inclined but that is not a bad thing. Each of us is trained for something in life. I can't do brain surgery --- I'm too stupid, I am a millwright. Lets take these questions one at a time:
1) Crank seal leak (beyond my scope): You are obviously smart enough to know it "may" be beyond your scope. I say "may" because you can always try to do it and if you F it up you can take it to the Honda shop. These are very simple engines but you still need some knowledge about them.
2) Compression test "never performed these tests before": This answer is what gave you away. Anyways it is higher with the throttle open because the Engine needs the air to compress it. This test is performed with the throttle wide open.
3) Carb: If this is the original carb all you need is a manual to check to see if the jets are correct. Also you have a gravity feed tank which means you need a larger fuel valve in the carb to ensure you get enough fuel to the carb. I don't know what size but maybe someone here can remember.

On a side note do you have a manual ?? If not I can email you one. If you PM (private message) me your email I will send you a pdf copy.
Also I do not like the way that fuel tank is mounted on there. Looks scary as hell.
