If you have to leave the Engine.

Move the tank as far over as you can, almost touching the frame. Move the brackets if you have to.(tack-tack-tack)

I got another fl350 today. It was partially assembled but also included a lot of spare parts. Almost enough to put another one together but only 1 frame. The good news is that I now have a stock Engine with good compression with duster clutch and another spare stock Engine that is seized w/oem clutch. Unfortunately there are a few parts that were not included. The exhaust tune pipe, the carburetor, battery, and starter. I'm going to work on it tomorrow, go through everything, and will take some photos.

Well this is the FL350. I removed the Engine and some other parts already. I'm not sure what I am going to do with it yet. I still need the exhaust tune pipe, carb, starter, and battery. Everything else was included x2 in most cases. One of the seats is in exceptional condition.

The spare Engine was outside for awhile with the cylinder/head off. There were pine needles inside. I got as much out as i could and sprayed some wd40 in there. Awhile ago I bought a clutch puller thinking it was the one for the driven clutch so decided to try breaking the SPARE Engine down a bit. In the process of getting the clutch off the crank actually broke free. Much more pine needles etc. came out. I filled the case with wd40 and let it sit over night. Today I opened this up. LOL :-)

I think it needs a rebuild.

Yes, a rebuild will be needed from bottom up. I have rebuilt dirt bike engines in the past but this will be my first FL350 Engine and I am looking forward to it. My main goal right now is to get the items that I'll need to complete 1 buggy. The tune pipe, carburetor, starter, and battery. The battery I can get but any thoughts on the other 3 items?

Should I stay with the stock tune pipe (I have the muffler) or is it worth the money for the DG exhaust?

I feel that a new carburetor will be money well spent rather than taking chances on a used OEM. What are some good upgrade options or what have others have had success with?

Lastly, are the ebay starters any good, if not what are my options?

My goal is to complete one buggy 100% by the spring. I have to be realistic about it because I have been swamped at work lately and have a few projects to get done around the house. I don't believe that I am going to use the original frame that I started the project with. The frame had already been modified in the back to accept the poorly place polaris Engine. I am going to use a unmodified frame so everything can go where it should.

I found this thread 3 pages deep started back in 2016. This is the chassis that I am going to be using for my flat track racer, so I decided to revive it vs start a new thread. I repaired the rear of the frame back to OEM as the cross section had been cut out from the previous owner to accommodate the snowmobile Engine.

This project is going to be a ground up build utilizing many spare part that I have as well as many new parts. I want this buggy to be reliable & fast for racing. I have taken some steps to accomplish this and hopefully it will all pan out.

The Engine I am using for this build will be a fully rebuilt bottom end with new bearings and seals. The crank was also rebuilt by Ken OConnor Racing in CT utilizing all oem parts. I had the case halves vapored honed before I rebuilt it. It was my first experience with this process, and I was very impressed with the results. For the top end on this Engine, I will be utilizing a Leckich Co. cylinder and head. I scored this treasure in back January and it will be a prefect addition to this build. The cylinder and head are currently out with Methodical getting the works.

The Engine will be paired with a high flow intake, 39mm mikuni pro-series flat slide carburetor, billet aluminum intake manifold, v-force reeds, and a torque spacer. I will be using a reproduction power-pros exhaust as well. Inspired by scpilot66, I am going to be using a pilot radiator setup to cool this baby down. Pilot radiator setup is courtesy of Kuma.

I inspected/rebuilt the gearbox to make sure all the gears and bearings were up to par. Installed some new seals as well. Brake master cylinder and rear caliper were rebuilt by nitrosport_5.

I have a set of freshly rebuilt works shocks that I will be using for the rear. The front suspension will be converted to a-arm utilizing a FARR Offroad TRX conversion kit. I toyed with the idea of keeping it with the OEM j-arm setup with a lower center of gravity, but I liked having a wider stance in the front for stability and the shocks with more adjustability. I am going to fine tune this as needed and possibly change to a shorter shock or re-spring. I will also be using a 18” tire up front and that will lower it a bit.

That is the gist of it. Some photos below I have of work completed thus far and will continue this thread with build progress. It won’t be ready for the first races of the season but I am going to do my best to be racing this thing ASAP.

Got my tires mounted up and test fit the front. The front end definitely lowered down quite a bit from the dirt tires setup. I got the speedchaser front bumper on there was well, slightly modified to work with the FARR kit.

I was thinking of assembling the buggy as is and giving it a rat rod look. I can’t decide. The frame is mostly bare metal, do people just clear coat over it? I don’t want it to rust out.

That looks great.. what size rims for the flat trackers?
Re frame, whatever you use, my 2 cents is make sure it seals. Rust loves it some oxygen and water.

Thanks! :-)

The rims are 10x10 in the rear and 5x10 up front.

I decided to just have the frame powder coated. Time is a commodity at this point in my life and it will be easiest for me to just go that route. Hoping to drop it off in the next few days.

Got my frame back yesterday. The guy that does sand blasting for me said he would prime and paint it as well so I did that. Only option was flat black or gloss black. I went with gloss black. I am going to do the suspension parts myself, Red.

I got the front end back together. Installed a aluminum foot tub that I made. Installed the main wire harness. I got the gear box installed in the frame. Installed new bearings and seals in the rear axle carrier. Next up will be the steering, brakes, and cables. Going to be putting the trailing arms back together as well.

It has been hotter than hell in the shop. Hope to have some more progress after the 4th.

Thanks guys!

I have not been to the track in NH yet. I am building this buggy to start attending those races. I wish I had made some more progress on it. At this point, I am hoping to make it to some races there this fall, we shall see.

A little more progress on this build. I got the steering wheel refinished and installed. I installed the rebuilt master cylinder and rear caliper with new e-brake cable and master cylinder cables. I got SS brake lines run. Installed the main wire harness. I have been powder coating many of the smaller parts getting them ready for install. Of all my spare parts I was missing one of the lower Engine/gearbox mounts & ordered a replacement.

Crunch time for this project as the first race is in less than 2 months. I got the rear end in over the weekend and will be dropping the Engine in soon.

Finishing touches on the Engine got completed tonight. Pulled off the oem Balencer gear cover and installed a billet cover with a crank third bearing support, courtesy of Methodical Fabricator. :-)
