BasketCaseUnknown

Anyone have an idea of the maker of this buggy, or any other info? Bought it a while back on Craigslist for a couple of hundred bucks. I flipped it in every direction possible looking for some kind of identification marks, & scoured the internet, but can find nothing. It has a Cuyuna 440 snowmobile Engine. Thanks

looks like an fl250 front end, modified to fit a home made chassis? Just a guess.

Some one spent some effort at it and it looks like they did a pretty decent job. They did put some thought into building it, like the support for the top of the front shocks. They weren't clueless. The only thing I see suspect there is the steering. If it is not set up right you will get some bad bump steer. That is clearly a homemade chassis as I see it because of the lack of gussets on the frame. They probably based it on the FL250 chassis dimensions because I do see FL250 parts there.

Google pro-atv parts of it look familiar to there early cars. Look at the shocks closely, if they are original they could be progressive suspension. They were out before works got big.

I would PM hoser because he used to race the challenger cars. hoser don't show up here very much anymore or comment even though he owns this site. Go to the members section and click on his name. Hell yah, thanks :)
I guess what stands out to me , is
1. To me the frame looks manufactured, rather than home built. Clean bends, clean welds, powder coat
2. The dual shocks on the rear suspension, the drive/clutch assembly
3. The Bend on the frame in the next picture, is what really makes it impossible to match up

Now I just need to decide what route I want to go to put it back together...I don’t. Know if i should stick with the 2 stroke 440 Cuyuna, maybe this cbr1000 motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) I got collecting dust, or something different all together. I don’t Ike the hood, I’m probably just going to wrap the buggy out in sheet metal.!still got a lot of researching, shopping and decision making to do, before it’ll be badass again

If it was me I would be careful on the powerful engines. That's a stock FL250 gearbox and they are chain drive inside. If it is the single chain it will snap from what I remember reading in this site. If it is the duplex chain then that it is better but not sure how much power those boxes will take. Caution is in order here. I think the original challenger cars ran a souped-up stock Engine with liquid cooling. At any rate I would split that gearbox and have a close look inside.

Good to know, I’ll definitely check out the enternals tomorrow...it’s gonna cost me 500 to get the parts I need to put the Engine together, i just wonder how the air cooled 440 2 stroke Engine would hold up in the West Texas heat...

Lots of guys run air cooled two strokes in the desert. Many here own FL350 air cooled in the desert and they run, even though the FL350 has a fragile Engine if everything ain't perfect tuned and condition. Just my opinion but I don't like those big engines in that machine with that set up.

I don’t know much of anything about the fl250, but could the trans be a Coleman. They were a weak link also but normally did okay behind that 440. Just don’t land off of a jump.

Does not look like a fl250 gearbox to me. Looks like it is stamped steel. I know for sure the fl259 box is cast aluminum.

Yes sir you may be right. Looks like the pic below of a coleman. Even the bracket mount looks similar.

Nope, not H&R or Pro-ATV. I raced for them both and positively know it is neither. It is nothing like an H&R fab car. But looks like a wanabe Pro-ATV car. But our frames had the rear down tubes hit farther back on the frame. And the rear was a swingarm and not an a-arm. And the fronts at that time were either dual or single swing arms. Those shocks and u-joints are similar to what the Pro-ATV cars ran in the early days.

And looking at it, it has the FL250 J arms, with the floating caster setup. That was pretty nice back in the early days. I don't like that cross tube in the front top of the cage. Looks like a head banger if you endo without a really tight harness.

Hey Superlite_Don --- long time no on here. Clue the guy in on what kind of engines you ran back then and what do you think of the coleman gearbox ??
