looking forward to this project.I always wondered how it would be if you stretched it instead of widening it,so the seating would be like a biplane :-)

Just my opinion but I think the biggest problem with that would be it would be so long it would high center over every little hump you drove it over.

I picked up 40' of tubing this morning.. :-) :-)

Yep, I'd prefer the side-by-side over the Goose-Maverick, for sure.

And an "OhShit bar" for the passenger is a must, as well. :-)

I agree with the above statements. Make that rear section wide as well. You will have more room and things will be easier to work on. Shoubadaba has started one of these projects as well, the thread was lost in the crash I believe. He is planning on making the whole thing wider as well as making a wider gas tank.

Didnt he get distracted by that silly Briggs built? :-)

Yeah, he has been workin on that Briggs car quite a bit. The race coming up in a week has him (and me) getting stuff ready. Once things settle, I suspect he will be putting some time on the 2 seater project.

I think Mudbogger has some 350 frames if someone is considering this mod they might see if he will part with them.

You know, for some reason I thought there was another double-wide project going before...

Glad to hear the stock powerplant is likely plenty-o-power for a double. Especially because I've got 1.5 engines for each one of my buggies (4 + 2 spares)!! Last thing I'd want to have to do is become an expert on another Engine type (i.e. EFI, 2-up) or make (i.e. Rotax, Arctic Cat, etc), mess with more carbs & clutches, and mothball a good working mot...(almost said it)...Engine. ;)

Ok. I'm no longer a skeptic. Now go build this thing and share your progress!!! =) I've got a couple projects to finish before I can even think about a FL350R-X2. (new model number? ha)

don't ever let a twin cylinder Engine scare you do like I did and use the 2 into 1 exhaust and single carb makes tuning a breeze with plenty of power left over to shred your tires.

My setup makes really good torque so all I basically did was install the drive clutch with settings I was using with my Honda Engine, later while tinkering and testing I lowered the RPM's lower than what I was use to running.

I went ahead and welded up the front half @ 19"s wider. I am now ready to start reattaching the rear section and I am wondering what all of your thoughts are on adding addition length. It was suggested to possibly add 6"s to the length and I like the idea, but my only concern is the shifter cables, choke & throttle cable lengths by extending it that much. In everyones opinion, how much can I safely add to the length with out running into cable issues? I know on the shifter cables you can just move the shifter back but @ 19"s wider I am not going to have a lot of room between the seats to work with. I thought about going 20"s wider which would have helped but then I would be looking at a front end tire width of 68"s.

Anyhow what do you all think I can safely get away with on the cables adding length??
Thanks in advance..

A local old school cart & cycle guy here will extend cables for like $10-$20 each.

how are you planning to connect the rear down tubes to the stock rear end?

you may have to modify the top half of it? or fab a spot for them to connect..

looks good.

Thanks,
I originally planed to bend a piece of tubing that would widen up top of the rear section and was going to connect it to the upper side rails so I could just use the factory mounting spots. But since my POS tubing bender took a dump on me & the fact that I stretched the frame 3 inches I am going to need to lengthen the rear down bars anyway, i may just move the upper mounts on the rear bars inward on the cage and use the stock rear mounting location. Plus after thinking about it a bit, it will most likely look a little better than having an additional piece of tubing that runs over the top of the rear fenders. Once I can get the other side mocked up I will do a little more experimenting to see what will work & look the best.

mocked up the cage this morning, I am going to use the stock rear lower mounting points and just move the upper rear mounts inward. It is the simplest, and I think the cleanest looking way to finish up the cage.

A couple more with the seats in, I still need to fab the center seat brace.. Once i can get the seat mounts done I will pull the cage off and start bracing everything. I want to add a vertical bars on both sides right below where the main hoop of the cage bolts on. I will gusset everything and plan to add another tube on each side of the lower frame.

Until I can pull the other Ody apart I wont be able to build shifter and parking brake mounts because I have no idea how much room I will have since I stretched the frame. One nice thing, looks like plenty of room for a sled Engine transplant in the future. :-)

I like your solution to the rear down tubes. Did you end up extending the back end?

Thanks.

Yes, I stretched the frame 3 inches. The front bars are still stock length, so on the rears once I removed the mounts from the cage there was really no good way to re attach them the way they came off, so I cut the side that welds to the cage flat & welded them to some 1 1/2 OD tubing. Then just notched the tubing and welded them back to the cage. Now I am able to use factory length front & rear down bars. The one held on with the vise grips in the picture is bent pretty bad so once I pull the other Ody apart I will use a straight rear down bar from it, I used the one straight bar I had to weld the mounts so it should be a direct bolt on.

It is looking great. My daughter loves it. She said if she had it she wouldn't have to sit in my lap.

in hind site I wish I would have added another inch to the width. With both seats in it it is going to be really tight to get the shifter and parking brake in the center between the seats. I may end having to use the factory location for the parking brake and having a custom cable made.

I agree, very nice in design and detail. The thread is very interesting to me and your ideas can open a whole new world to our community. Well done indeed. :-) :-) :-)
Now trademark it before AFTERTHOUGHT gets a hold of it PLEASE!!!!!! Or patent it !!! (if you can hehehe)
