It's been a while but the wife, daughters & I snuck out for a ride this afternoon. We were a good 30 minutes from the truck having a great time when along came the rain. My 7 year olds new favorite tree. :-) It sure felt good to finally get to do some riding again, it's been way to long...

I hear you rand, this was the first time it has rained all year. And it didn't amount to much, just wet enough to soak us and get the buggies muddy on the way out of the canyon.. :-)

Rain is nice when it knocks down the dust.

This weekend out at Walker River Resort is was so dusty that you had to hang back a hundred yards from the rider in front of you to be able to see.

Hopefully you have prefilters on everything :-) You get a wolfsnout mask yet?

No Wolf snout mask.

I don't like sucking up the dust and neither does the Ody. I stay back out of the dust cloud.

I wanted a little more ground clearance up front on the side by side so I swapped out the front tires for a set of 22x7x10 which helped a bit. The front end was really soft with the added weight of the second person so I have been watching ebay for a set of cheep shocks I could try until I can afford to order a set of Works for it. i found these Snowmobile shocks on ebay for 20 bucks plus shipping and thought I would give them a try.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/170859855022?ss ... 500wt_1180" .".."

They are 13.5"s long eye to eye and I had to compress them slightly to get them mounted. They have stiffened up the front end a bit & they seem to have much better rebound then the stock Ody shocks, & the added ground clearance is a real bonus. :-)

here is a comparison pic of the front end with the stock shocks & 21' tires..

I would like to, there just not in my budget right now. Are there any Pilot parts you needing, maybe we could make a trade? :-) :-)

Well I went out tonight and tried the new snowmobile front shocks, best 20 bucks I have spent yet on the side by side. :-) :-) they screwed the alignment up but man what a difference over the stock Ody shocks!! So far I am very happy with them, now just need to find another cheep pair for the rear.

I finally took a few minutes today and weighed the front end of the side by side and my daughters 350 Ody with a jack stand & bathroom scale. I was shocked to see the side by side is almost 83lbs heavier. I would have never dreamed I could have added that much weight to it while doing the conversion, but I weighed an extra stock Ody seat I have & it was 20 lbs & change by it's self so I guess all the extra stuff adds up. I have aluminum wheels on the front of my daughters Ody also, so there may be a few extra pounds with the stock steel front wheels on the side by side.

I have started watching craig's list for a cheep snowmobile so I can add some more power to the side by side this winter. Not really much for sale here close but I have seen a few in 500-800 range in the Denver area. What are everyones thoughts on going Fan cooled vs water cooled in this buggy? Also I have seen a few 440's for sale, would a 440 fan cooled make enough extra power too even be worth the effort too do the swap or should I stick to a 500 cc water cooled & up? I have ZERO experience with sleds so I am pretty clueless on what to look for.
Any advice would be appreciated & thanks in advance,
Nick

stick with a water cooled sled Engine ,preferably something with twin carbs, should be in the 75+ hp range .my little xcr 440 puts out 80 hp .I think around 50hp for a 440 fan

Thanks for the info, honestly I am so clueless about these things I don't really know what to look for. Here are a few adds I scanned through..

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3136795592.html"

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3218856314.html"

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3205208979.html"

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3137521664.html"

http://denver.craigslist.org/rvs/3141045587.html"

And then there is this Engine local to me so it would save me 200 bucks worth a diesel to go pick it up. :-)

Nick, you may want to look into something from one of our board members.........at least I think he's a board member.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/emmanuel-farrug ... 4340.l2562

He has prefabed kits to install these 583 engines in an Ody. Should be enough power and you may save yourself some time and money making Engine mounting brackets and exhaust systems.

Thanks Rand, that does look like it would take a lot of the work out it. Now I just need to wait until a good donor sled pops up that is not to far away from me. :-) I am shocked that most I have looked at didn't have electric start. Since my wife does drive this buggy, I would really need to try and find one with it if at all possible.

I remember the days when the wife used to ride my FL250. She would just climb in and give that sad puppy dog look. That meant ....pull start it sucker!

Got to have the electric starter!

Just throwing in my 2 cent.

Look for an early 90's ski doo. That's what I got for my swap. I bought an Engine mount from farr-offroad. it's good quality, and saved me the time fabricating a mount. it bolts right in.

I bought a 1992 formula plus 580. came with electric start. then I bought a Honda goldwing radiator for 10 cents + shipping on eBay.
having the full sled makes thewiring a lot easier.

I would love to see this thing ripping with a sled Engine . it's so much power. :-)

Great info Thank you. I will keep an eye open for a similar sled. Unfortunately there is hardly ever anything for sale around here, (no snow) so I will have to travel to pick something up.

That thing does sound wicked!! But since I left the rear section stock width I better stick with a twin cylinder. There is a smokin deal on a 600 Vmax on the Denver Craigs right now for 599.00 but I didn't think it would fit.

Is it? For some reason I thought it was a 3 or 4 cylinder.
