The vmax4 is a 4 cylinder. They made a 750 and an 800. Later years were the 800. Im pretty sure all the others were twins.

Rarerat....there's a damn near complete Rotax 583 Rave on eBay right now for $299 + shipping.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-SKIDOO-FORMULA-MACH-1-MOTOR-ENGINE-583-RAVE-/190709922075?pt=Snowmobile_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c6732791b&vxp=mtr

In your FL-double-wide, you have room for any sled Engine you want! No need to "make room" for stuff like carbs, pull-starts, etc. lol

Sleds are cheap in August! I picked up a '90 SkiDoo with 467 Rotax L/C twin for $220 on CL and its about as solid running as it gets. Then picked up a complete single carb intake for $55 on eBay.

FarrOff-road.com has a good album of progress on their LT FL470, a Rotax conversion with LT front and rear. Pretty neat-o stuff!! http://www.farr-offroad.com/apps/photos/ Its got my panties all in a bunch with some anxiety to get back in the garage to work!! lol

rareat, im 99.9% sure that red vmax 600 you linked to in denvrr is a twin. i did a lttle google research and that's what i came up with. would make a nice powerplant. i love my 89 yamaha 570. thing runs flawlessly . only issue, it was too wide to fit the sled water pump, oil injection and pull start due yo the layout. no problem for me, Mercedes pump, premix, and electric start. So if you are going to consider it, take some measurements and decide if u want to use it. maybe get pics from the seller. is it electric start? feel free to ask any questions about the swap, I've done it twice.

Thanks for the info guys, I just recently started looking for a donor sled & I'm sure something will pop up. Even if I find something right away, I wont pull the side by side apart until this winter because the family is enjoying it as is for now. If I find something I'll post here and get everyones thoughts on it before buying. Electric start is one of the things that is almost a "must have" because my wife rides this buggy.

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate all the great advice.

IMO find a complete running sled so you know you have everything I spent way too much time searching for a exhaust for my swap, I had the stock twin pipe exhaust and a AAEN after market twin exhaust but I wanted the 2 into 1 OEM pipe to keep the Engine compartment clean and leave room for everything else, I gave up some HP with the pipe choice but I was over powered to begin with.

Any modern liquid cooled 440cc on up would be my choice, post here before you buy for example skidoo made some 440 sleds that were only 65HP it was their low power version of their other 440 engines probably double the HP and torque if what you have now but that Engine really had no potential if you wanted to crank it up where as you buy the better version of their 440 Engine it makes 80-95hp and it rock solid reliable stock, other MFGs also had lower power versions of their engines.

Make sure it has a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) ignition I had a 440 fan cooled sled Engine in a 250 Ody and it kept getting dust in the points and I had to keep removing the flywheel and cleaning them got old fast but was a great Engine sled engines don't always seal up the ignition area good.

Keep in mind your never going to swap back to the Honda stuff you selling all the Honda stuff should more than cover the cost of the Engine swap keep this in mind when choosing a 300.00 sled over a more modern 600.00 sled plus your chances of parting out whats left of the more modern sled is even greater.

470 Rotax twin. Compact size, can use a small primary clutch that will play nice with the Oddy secondary, less pipe dependent than the bigger twins, single or dual carb availble.

It would be a smoother ride and longer travel with an a-arm front suspension. That would be awesome on it. This is one of the best jobs i`ve seen in awhile. Love it, had one. Had a pilot and now own an Redline Revolt.

Thank you, I'd like too change the front end over to A arms sometime in the future, but right now the thing it needs the most are new rear shocks. I am thinking about trying a set of of Fox airs on it as soon as the budget permits.

I don't know I was just going to look for what ever I could get a deal on, since I figured I would have to build upper mounts anyway. Where did you see his listed?

Took the family out for a ride this evening. My daughter invited her friend so the two girls drove the side by side, my wife in the Pilot and my 7 year old and I were in her Yerf. Her friend had never been in a buggy before but she had a great time. :-)

Anyway, as we were headed home I snapped these pics, the first while my 7 year old was still driving and the rest once we stoped after almost hitting a tree. She learned a valuable lesson about when off roading you need to keep your eyes on the trail. She tried to look at my picture and the trail turned but she didn't. :-) It was a great time had by all.

I picked up a well used beater fl350 with a blown top end last weekend but the good thing was it had Works shocks front & rear. The fronts are going on my daughters Ody, but the rears have found a new home on the side by side. :-) I haven't had a chance to ride it with the Works yet but hopefully be a big improvement over the old blown stockers.

They look like they may have been seeping for a while, but they still feel good when you cycle them. I pulled them apart and moved the preload clip down 3 notches guess, & I am anxious to give them a try before sending them off for service. :-)

Finally got around to adding the dual Pre Filter set up on the side by side. The filters are K&N RU0620 and I just used a 3 dollar elbo from home depot.

Against my better judgement I snuck off in the side by side for a quick ride to try out the rear Works shocks. All I can say is.. Holy $hit what a difference good shocks make!! :-)

My daughter & I snuck out for a few hours this morning. Had a great time and the Side X Side preformed flawlessly. :-)

Everytime you update this thread with a new pic or upgrade, I am amazed at how well this project came out. Excellent job! Are you still considering an Engine upgrade?
