i am about to start my trx450r a arm conversion. i am not sure what i am going to use for shocks yet. i might just build it so i can use my current works shocks. and haven't even looked at steering yet. here r some mock up pics just using zip ties to get the idea

Make sure you take some good measurements and pics for me as far as a-arm welds ;)

probably going to weld tabs on to attach the a arms. don't plan on selling this machine.

just from quickly mocking things up it seems that swapping the upper a arms left to right will make things easier just the way they are designed..is there any reason i should not do this.

Just get it geometrically sound and you shouldn't have any problems!

I have done this a few times buddy. First off get some 1 inch 1/8th plate and make some jigs so you can bolt the arms together and your spindle. what I do is bolt the upper and lower a-arm to the spindle and measure the spread between the upper and lower a-arms at the spindle so you will know what the spread should be at the frame then cut the flat plate( i refered to earlier) 3 inches longer then your spread. Drill some hole in the flate plate then bolt it to the outside of your arms and you should be able to hold the complete left or right assembly up to help mock up your mounting tabs. Your also going to need to build a subframe and bumpsteer kit for this all to work well. I use a set of suzuki LTR450 front shocks. They are fully adjustable and give 10 inches of travel.

That looks really good. If I just use my works shocks I have I can't set the a arms down as far as you have. The bottom a arm will be just below the bottom of the stock frame. You have any pic of your steering.

Ill post some. the problem your going to run into with trying to not mount the arms low is your steering. There is no way to make the steering work if you mount the arms the way you mocked up your arms Beacuse your tie rods will hit your frame and you will have alot of bumpsteer. Bumpsteer is when your wheels move through the motion of travel your wheels end up towing in or out. Its should only be no more then 1/8th inch. I have tried to not use a bumpsteer kit and also mount the arms directly to the stock frame and could not get it to work right. I would sell your works and buy the ltr450 shocks. You can get a good set for 200 bucks. Also you can use your works just mount the top of the shock lower on the chassis lower. Add a gusset between the middle bar and the top bar that curves. Ill find a pic for ya of this and my steering.

that would be great. i am going to have to get some measurements and get some steel to make a jig so i cam mock it up properly..

how does it ride with those shocks. i assume better than stock but how about compared to works, or try 450r shocks. are the suzuki shocks the best that you came across

well my welder ran out of gas so i have to wait until i can get some more. i have been trying to get the spread right and its not working out. i end up with very limited travel somewhere around 9". not sure what i am doing wrong but can't do much more until i get more gas..what was your spread that you ended up using.

Ill check my notes. But I used the stock spindles and hubs so that might be the diffence

I thought something looked different. Yeah that measurement will be slightly different. One other thing that I am wondering is how to get the two ball joints perfectly in line. But I need to get my spread correct first.

This the first time doing something like thus so I want to get to right.

ok so i talked to some guys over at the trx forum and got some measurements from a 450r

center to center vertically is 5 3/8''
top horizontally is 7.5''
bottom horizontally is 5.5''

my horizontal measurements will of coarse by farther apart but now i know the difference it needs to be. only one other thing to figure out and that's where the top and bottom are place because the top is narrower than the bottom. so do you just centre the top a arm between the bottom or is the front straight in line.

also any ideas on steering would be helpful,

well i got some more done on the a arms swap today..i got the upper arms mounted and welded up, and got the hoops for the bottoms bent, but might trash them and make new ones, they are longer than i thought they would be. i bought all the steel for $6 bucks and they had more so i might go back to the scrap yard and get some more and redo the hoops for the lower arms.

Fully, that thing is going to be sweet! I wish i would have done my FL570 before i had it powdercoated. I have a spare FL350 in pieces that i just may have to do the A-Arm front conversion to. Really good work. Keep it up!

Its not easy to explain how to find the inner tie rod end location over the internets.
I spent a lot of time explaining it to turbotexas in the past, then he went on to bash me for insuing something I had no idea what he was talking about.

I'll start with this, then I'll try to find a post that explains it in detail.

The inner tie rod end needs to be located at or near the center of the arc(radius)that is created by the outer tie rod end as it travels through the available wheel travel.Think about it.
