I will be need many used parts as time go on....anyone got old used 250 parts out there? Going to need a complete axle setup, roll cage, ect.....all I have now is the bare frame and front suspension....BIG PROJECT!!!!

Are you the same guy that was over on MB.net? And are you the same one who has the frozen J-arms? If so, I'm the same DMoneyAllstar that was advising you to sell it and buy something more complete. ;) You need steering wheel/stem, seat, axle, tires, cage, clutch, brakes, skid-plates, drive-train, fenders...which is like 85% of the buggy and 90% of the cost.

I've done a Yamaha 340-twin swap on an FL250. It was a fun intro to buggies and ran awesome, although it sure was fugly. There are pics of it on my MB.net profile. It took a total of one sled and two partial FL250's to complete, plus a roll racing cage I found on CL.

But some advice...

> Honda doesn't keep this stuff around, so the 2nd-hand market is your only source
> Build a make-shift base for your Engine and make sure it runs before you go spending time & $'s on stuff
> Decent fab skills and basic tool set are a must (welder, metabo, wire wheel, etc)
> Your best bet for drive-train for your 340 is the stock FL250 axle, pillow block, e-brake, and CVT gearbox.
> Stock rear brake caliper may be pricey to find in good working condition
> Spend a lot of time fitting the Engine in the rear as LOW as possible in the chassis
> Make sure you have room for the sled exhaust pipe, as there isn't much real-estate behind the seat
> Make sure you have the clutches aligned perfectly AND that both clutches accept the same width belt. Plenty of choices out there for belth length, but they don't make one in two widths! ha
> If you have the sled primary clutch and it works out, the stall RPM may not be right where you want it.
> If you use a racing seat or seat from a car...note they don't offer much clearance for your legs under the steering wheel.
> Use a YFZ350 Banshee radiator -- they're a dime a dozen.
> I'd get the Engine & drive-train installed and running before going crazy on an elaborate cage.
> If using the stock steering wheel with throttle, you will need a custom throttle cable made.
> Repair any rust cancer on the parts you do have.

Good luck with it, and be sure to post pics!

Not to hijack your build log, but here is how mine turned out...just HATED the cage thanks to my buddy's poor decision making. But she ran good and sold for $850 after 3-weeks on CL. =)

And here is what it looked like with the Summit Racing seat, rear fenders...plus a heat shield (actually a vent off a filter test stand).

Here is one I built last year. And some vids on how I did it.

Take your time and get the Engine as far forward and as low as you can.

WELL, HERE IT IS....WHAT A BASKET CASE...I MUST BE ABSOLUTELY CRAZY TO BE DOING THIS!!!!
THE Engine IS A KAWASAKI 340 LIQUID COOLED, THE TRANS YOU SEE IS FROM A POLARIS QUAD WITH A REVERSE GEAR...GOTTA HAVE REVERSE!!!! I PICKED UP A COMPLETE J ARM SETUP FROM A GUY FOR 20 BUCKS, EVERYTHING IS THERE AND IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE. I HAVE TO FIND A REAR AXLE AND WHEELS TO CONTINUE MY MOCK AND FAB WORK, SO SHE'S GONNA SIT UNTIL I FIND THESE ITEMS. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN FIND A COMPLETE AXLE, BEARINGS, HUBS AND WHEELS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I'M AT A STANDSTILL UNTIL I CAN GET THE AXLE SETUP. THANKS!!!!

Make sure you grease fitting do not hit the foot tub if your using one. Or make sure you can get to them with the tub on. I have not sone any grease fitting but when I was looking to do so I notice they have to be in the correct spot.

Mods to fit larger sled belts. I quess you can use spacers as well. I think a member on this site sells them or has some. But this is what I did. Out lots of hours on the setup and works great and shift great as well.

Just a progress report....Got the trans and axle in along with the steering. (thanks Bighead).

Still waiting for my tires/wheels and seat to come this week. Then I sould be able to finish building my Engine mounts and get the Engine in place and secured....gonna be tight because I'm trying to keep that anchor as close to ground as possible and still be able to get the recoil off, just in case.

Decided to nix the Polaris trans for now, going to look for a Sportsman or Explorer model, they're much tougher than the one I currently have.

more to come.........

Well, this is what I came up with for my Engine mount. It's made of 1' box that will be gussetted and plated when complete. Using the smaller tube allwed me to keep it lower in the chasis and much lighter than going with larger tube. After it's all done it will be plenty strong!!! I used an Engine plate from an old go cart for the adjustable (slide) mounts for a little belt adgustment forward or back, worked perfectly.........now all I need to do is figure exact placement and find a belt that will work, have a shout out to Dayco for help on this. All in all, it fit well.....stay tuned!

I'm loving how low it sits in the frame.. Now all you need is to find out the correct belt size :)
