I just got back, long trip.

Litttle Sahara, Utah is overated, St. Anthony's is awsome, it was so good, we didn't even go on to Killpecker.

If he could, Hoser would stay until the snow starts falling.

Compare this and the next photo, they are only a few seconds apart.

OK, here are few more details.

Originally we had planned to start at Killpecker in Wyoming, but it was rainy in the area, and with a 22 mile dirt and gravel road that can swallow up campers for breakfast, we decided to go to Utah first.

I started off for Little Sahara, Utah on 8/11, in the Utah mountains on I-70 just before dark, I blew out a tire on the trailer, or more correctly, it shredded, see photo. Of course, no phone service, turned out the jack wouldn't lift it, so I used 4x4's and made a ramp. Since it was getting late and I was tired and fustrated, I went to camp Walmart for the nite. Hoser stopped for the nite around Salt Lake City.

The next morning, we met at Little Sahara. We camped at the central campground, very nice with paved sites and lots of trees, it is BLM, very cheap and staff was friendly and helpful. Our camp area had over a hundred campsites, and we were the only ones there until the weekend, and then only three or so more campers. At sand mountain, it is a big flat dusty parking lot, a few campers, then on the weekend, maybe 20 or 25. This is where most of the crazies are at, Hypo quads, and all trying the climb the hill at the same time.

For the next few days, we explored the area, the northern part is larger dunes, the south is sand mountain, and most of the rest is smaller dunes. Hoser and his son really enjoyed trying to climb sand mountain, Hoser made it, his son almost did, but was a bit short on power and traction. My camera showed 86 photos, but only 60 downloaded, none of this area. Hoser will have plenty and will post them when he gets back, that is if he decides to come home.

Days were hot, peaked at upper 80's, so mid day we made our town runs for everything from stickers for Hoser's machines, a rear main seal for the Drakart, to the tire for the trailer. Evenings cooled of quickly, with lows of high 50's to low 60's.

On sunday, we headed for St Anthony's, at about dark, I saw something billowing out from under the tires on the trailer, thought it was another tire, so I stopped. Not a tire this time, but the fresh water tank, it had sprung a leak at the drain and was proceeding to dump all 120 gallons. Design defect, petcock hangs down too low, and had signs of having drug and cracked the tank at the connection. Met up with Hoser at Walmart next morning and got a bunch of gallon jugs of drinking and flushing water for the next stop.

At SA, there are basically three places to camp, private at the east end, full hookups, lots of trees and grass, near the small dunes, and pricey. We went on to the next, Desert Oasis, dusty dump, didn't bother to check prices after getting a chewing out from operator for driving thru to look the place over. Went on to the BLM campground, which is farther to the west, as we pulled in, I knew we had discovered Hoser's idea of heaven. Newly developed this year, nice level gravel sites, some with gazeebos, most with electric, reasonable prices, and about a quarter mile from the edge of the dunes. Has maybe a hundred sites, and 8 or ten occupied when we got there, more came later in the week, but not many. It was so good there, that we didn't bother going on to Killpecker, just stayed and played.

Days were in the lower 80's and nites high 50's to low 60's, weather was clear until Wednesday when storms came late afternoon, and most of the night. I left thursday morning to get back for work, Hoser was going to stay as long as he could, I think he will be back sunday nite.

These dunes are about 22 miles long, and a mile or two deep, bigger at the west, and smaller at the east. There is a "designated route" from east to west along the lower edge of the area, there are some areas where you can open it up and haul, ond others where you have to pick your way thru. We explored quite a bit, got all the way to the west, but while I was there, we never got all the way to the east. Most of the dunes fall off very sharply, and at the bottoms of some, there is a bit of volcanic rock (this is only about 75 miles from Yellowstone park).

The big ones really create a pucker factor, I was having a problem with vertigo again, and truthflully, lacking the balls to try it, I never made it to the tops of any of the big ones, but Hoser and his son made it to virtually all of them.

The ranger told us that some of the dunes are about 600 feet above the floor. I would guestimate that the steep sides of some of them could be two or three hundred feet, about like falling off a twentyfive story building. The photos don't do this area justice, you would really need a 3D motion picture to tell the story. It is something you have to experience to really know what it is like.

There is a bunch of ponds by the BLM camp grounds that seem to part of a local
canal system to irrigate the wheat fields you see behind them, mom says the
level changes during the day and said it reminded her of the tides she is use to
in Florida.

The drive home was LONG but the Ritz got us there without a problem (3500 mile
trip) as usual it ran flawlessly cept for the bout of bad gas on the way there,
dunno whats up with gas prices but in NE where I paid paid 2.19 on the way
there it was $2.54 a gallon on the way home at the same station... MUTTS

Drakman I concur about Little Sahara, it is a different type of ride, I would enjoy it better
on a quad than a Pilot where your on and off the gas like tight trail riding most of the
time how ever from what I seen we didnt cover only about 1/4 of the place so some
day I will be back to explore the dunes even more but using a quad.

St. Anthony, Idaho flat out kicks ass from what I seen my vote goes to the BLM camp
grounds we stayed at but I would like to talk to others to see what they feel about the
others, after you left we explored more of the dunes and rode for 1/2 hr never seeing
any old or new tracks where others had rode, we found "sand mountain" on the back side
talk about a STEEP hill feels straight up and down when you try to climb it, seen a few
tricked out quads with paddles make it but no way for my Pilot on something that
steep and no way to get a run at it.

I will be back to St. Anthony's next year and want to spend at least 8 days there maybe
even stop at Killpecker for 4-6 days on the way home, we went up town for more gas
after you left and found a pretty good pizza joint, next trip I will take at least 3 gallons of
oil I used every drop of the 2 gallons I brought with me on this trip, I will also have at
least one 32 gallon fuel cell plus my usual gas cans on the trailer so we don't run out,
at that elevation all my stuff ran perfect and was happy with the 85 octane generic
pump gas so I can fill everything up right at St. Anthony (the town) on the way into
town.

There is more I will fill in later I am tired from the long drive home.

Missing pics I took at LS you have any you took to post?
