Who is up for The BIG Western Ride 2006?

Drakman and I hit some of the best riding areas I have been to yet.

So where will it be and when?

Rock Springs (Killpecker) is the closest for me (1158 miles) but is all primitave camping,
the road to the riding area is 22 miles of gravel / dirt so can be a mess if the weather
has been bad (rain) the dunes are great their is plenty of areas there left for use to
explore.

I hope to have the bus ready for a trip like this and should have plenty of water
gasoline storage place this year so running out should not be a problem.

Saint Anthony Sand Dunes in Parker Idaho (1430 miles) also kicked ass it would be second
on my list, the dunes are 20 miles long and 5 miles wide? Plenty of places to expolore getting
their is easy its just a long drive, town is like 5 miles away if you need provisions, camp
sites are nice.

Little Sahara in Utah (1399 miles) would be my 3rd choice their is places to explore far
as the eye can see from top of sand mountain but it is mostly small sand hills packed
together I enjoyed riding on the quad more than the Pilot at this place, camping is good.

My mom is ready to go back at any time, I would like to make at least one trip west when
my son is out of school so he can go, we will have the ATC250R setup with better tires and
exhaust this year heh.

I'll go where ever, when ever. Pretty busy at base this year until May-ish though.

Put it together, the more EPIC the better.

Terri and I should be able to make it, no time other than winter(and not this winter) is good for us so then any other time is equally as bad.

EDITED for clarity

Translation : Any date would be fine...

They all will require bailing on work for a few weeks..oh well

I, of course, am in.

Since you're talking about bringing quads, etc, I would like to look a including Moab, Utah. It is not dunes, but is supposed to be great riding and scenery.

Weather, I would think that anything before May or so could be really cold and maybe pretty snowy at both Killpecker and Saint Anthony. Both of those locations are reporting temps below zero today.

Last year we did Killpecker on June 5th? weather was perfect if you ask me I guess we
will have to keep an eye on weather or ask someone on the dune review board for suggestions
on what is the best time to ride.

You have room for your quad and the Drakart in your new trailer?

The garage space is 8'X12', so Drak or a couple of couple of quads will fit.

My plan is Drak in the trailer, and quad in the back of the truck.

Yea count me in also...

How many days are we talking here ? Two weeks ?
How many days did you guys ride/drive for the 2005 trip ?

Sold the Bad500 - going to buy a 16' enclosed trailer...
(hope that doesn't sadden Jerry to much - I know he really liked my old trailer)

I'm also trying to decide if I want to buy a quad or a three-wheeler or a bike...
(Been leaning towards the trike actually)

Got the basketcase in the garage now stripped down to the rolling chasis
Going to warm up the cutting torch as soon as I figure out what-the-he??
I want to end up with :-)

Anyhow looks kinda like everyone is shooting for sometime between Mid May and Mid June right ?

Should be a blast...

Later
Dennis

Since some people may want to bring some school age kids along, how about we do it about as soon as school is out.

Hoser and I found June to be a pretty good time to go this past year, I would expect it to be about the same next time.

I am thinking Killpecker, Saint Anthony, and then maybe Little Sahara, Utah and/or Moab, Utah. Mid-western guys could also add Little Sahara, Ok on the front or back of the trip.

We could set some dates, starting early June and finishing mid June, then, whoever could make part or all of the trip could do so.

Killpecker (Rock Springs, Wyoming) is a really large, all open area, it is free, so nobody should complain about the price. Last year Hoser and I camped at a fairly barren and dusty spot, since then, He has discovered some really nice alternative spots that would accomodate a pretty nice sized group.

Saint Anthony's has a very nice BLM campground with all services, cost is dependent upon what size of space and what services you get, you could put up a tent, or bring a mobile home. Riding is free, and there is lots of it.

Little Sahara, Utah is a BLM area, fee for camping, riding is free. We camped at the central campground, very nice with lots of trees and paved spaces. There are two other camping areas that might be considered, good and bad features to each area. This is an area that would be nice to have a trike or quad to be able to explore more than we did last time.

Moab, Utah, there are an abundance of public and private areas to camp nearby. The riding is not Pilot or Drak friendly, this would be a great area to have a bike, trike, or quad. Many people ride utility quads in this area, there are many trails, but most will require your machine to be hauled to a trailhead as the trails are not generally adjacent to the camping areas.

There is another area in eastern Utah, right along I-70 called White Wash dunes, this is a small area with several trails out to other areas, it is free, there are no services here, but this might be a good alternative.

Utah requires all off road vehicles to be registered, you should do this before hand, as doing it there is time consuming and expensive. They honor out of state registrations, so, if your state does it, it might be best to do it at home.

I was thinking a spring and fall trip or summer and late summer trip soon as
we figure out the best weather time to go.

For me all the places listed are a long drive Killpecker being the closest for me
and its 1200 miles, with gas prices being as high as they are I need to make the
trips longer than normal to get the best bang for the buck especially if I am
taking the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) home or bus since they will get 1/2 the mileage of my Suburban.

Drakman is spot on with the registration stickers I need to do some checking and
find out where is cheapest place to buy them, we don't have them here in Illinois
so I need to price them out, Drakman how much is CO Pilotman how much is MI ?

Hoser, the last I herd MI requires there sticker no matter what. If you plan a trip to Silver Lake there is an advantage to an MI ORV sticker.

I have a week long Boy Scout trip in June so early summer is out for me. If there is a late summer trip I would like to consider it however we are talking about hauling the rig & toys out to Glamis in November. Wife’s family is in Tucson and I’ll be on the clock for the days at Glamis so this trip seams to have the stars aligned just right. Other than that I may not try too many long trips with the price of fuel. So all this is a long way to say that my opinion on the 'Big Trip' is a small one, but I will keep dreaming.

Colorado stickers are $15.25 each, you might have to "live here" to qualify for the regular stickers.

I don't know about temp or out of state stickers, I'll have to check on that next week.

If I send you the money can you buy and send me 3 of the ATV stickers??

I think MI would be a better choice since I would need them if I wanted to ride there in
2006, I will hold off on getting one for the RV until I go to MI riding...

I can pick up as many as you'd like....

The DNR issues licenses for all ORVs on an annual basis. The annual fee for an ORV license is $16.25.

http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook/register.htm

Licenses are valid from April 1 through March 31 of the following year, regardless of the date of purchase. Vehicles that are licensed under the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) Vehicle Code as street vehicles require an ORV license only at such time as they are being used as an ORV. A “street-licensed” ORV does not need an ORV license to use forest roads, but it will need an ORV license if it is used on designated trails or in areas designated for cross-country use.

So I would guess you wouldn't want me to get them till after April 1st since the planned trip
looks to be in June. Since I will probably try to make this trip, I'll get as many as we need for those going with our group?

Pilotman

P.S. You don't need an ORV stickers for The Ritz... you would only need a State Park stickers for it if you came to Silver Lake or stayed in a state run campground. They are, I think, $24 for the yearly pass....

OK, lets get this thread going again. I'd like to include Glamis in this ride if possible. Anybody got any dates in mind?

Mike, itching to ride.

If anyone is thinking about Glamis, it should be a lot earlier in the year than June, by that time it gets so hot all the locals quit going. Right now is good, Feb to March or April is the best.

IMO that trip needs to be 5 weeks not 2 these places are huge and require
time to explorer, your layout would be a great trip if you wanted to see
the most in one trip.

I am trying to imagine what our bunch would look like after being out for five weeks, not pretty.

The two to have on the trip for sure are Killpecker and Saint Anthony. The two areas have a completely different feel and geography. After several days at Killpecker, it would be nice to have all the facilities that Saint Anthony has to offer. The trip between these two areas is pretty easy, no big mountains or anything like that.

White Wash would be a big letdown after the other tw places, as would Walden. Both of these places are good for kids and families for a day or two, but this group would find these both pretty small after an hour or two.

If people are looking for some variety, what about throwing Moab Utah on the end? Not a place for buggies, but if you have a quad or a bike, I understand it is great. This is not dunes, but rather, it is spectactular views and rock/trail riding. I don't believe there are any of their many riding spots that you can camp at, but rather there are areas and campgrounds that are an 'easy comute' to the riding spots. Just something to think about.
