Post subject:  Shorted Wires 440 ROTAX Stator

A follow up from this thread http://www.pilotodyssey.com/PO/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1289

Well after several hours of hunt and check I found the reason for my
intermittent spark problem, the wires behind the stator were shorted
out, sometimes they would ground sometimes they wouldn't.

The blue arrow is pointing towards the area where the wires shorted

The spare came off my spare Engine, this is the one I ran at last years ECJ as you
can see the crank seal is leaking pretty good, that is why it was removed.

This Engine has a cool setup it is actually 2 ignition systems, each cylinder has its own
trigger coil (green arrows) CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) and coil, you can adjust each trigger coil separately,
retard or advance the timing, once you tweak each cylinders timing then you can
advance or retard both at the same time by adjusting the stator plate (blue arrow)

Good thing you found that crank seal leaking before it was to late. Have you played with the igniton timing much on the 440? I've read that you can gain a lot of bottom end power by retarding the timing about 4 degrees when the pipe is cold (good for trail riding). Some of the guys that race the sleds put a switch on the handle bars to change the timing to increase the performance at the start of the race.

I havent played with it yet but that is one of the things I will play with
once I get other things dialed in, I already changed the rotary valve
timing for more torque, removed one cylinder gasket (like a spacer)
I have been told the stock timing settings is conservative and I can
advance it a few more degrees and still run pump gas.
