Well I have put a good amount of time on the Pilot, but this week was killer. I launched off a good sized dune and when landed heard a small bog, turned around and headed for camp and about 100yards away needed to choke it partially to get it back to camp =\ Once turning it off, it never started again. Right now im waiting for my buddy to bring it to the house so I can get a compression check and make sure top end wise is still good.

Plug was darker than normal, I ran it at 32:1 instead of my normal 40:1.
Air Filter was clean and the intake looked clean (wont know for sure until I open it up)
Compression could blow my finger off...again wont know until its here

WOT- Complete bog and wanted to die
Choke FULL- Wants to die
No Choke- Idles fine until throttle
1/8th choke- Ran fine until i turned it off

Any ideas before I get the Pilot here? I have limited internet for a few more days, so sorry if anyone has PMéd me, it took a couple days just to be able to stay here without it cutting out

He has NEVER PAID me for rebuilding his Pilot Engine.

He seems to have plenty of money for his other toys but NONE TO PAY ME?

Hey Twilight when you read this keep in mind every time you start that Pilot that I spent about 14 hours of my life on getting your Engine running again and saved you hundreds of dollars over sending it to ANYBODY else, then again I never been paid so I guess your even more money ahead.

Do the compression check go from their, if compression is good pull seat, turn off gas, remove fuel filter put thumbs over both openings and shake it up, pour the gas out the inlet side on a white paper towel look to see what comes out, taking a picture and posting is a plus.

Sounds to me you were running out of gas.

Any backfiring ?

No backfiring until the final turnover. After thinking a bit it may be the spray oil for the UNI that I used, never used the brand before and may have over soaked it causing some to be sucked in...just a thought though.

Coming over the pass right now, should be here in a hour.

On the flip side, my 250r did great and so did my cr250, got many props on being able to ride a ATC right.

Hoser i'll be more ready on sunday or monday when I start the tear down and assessment.

Got the Engine out today and immediately recognized a problem. First off there was a metal on metal sound when the Engine was on its side, and second my fingers in the exhaust port were removed to a lovely coating of metal shavings (aka silver nail polish)



Removing the head I found more silver nail polish coating the dome, so right now im thinking I broke a ring... well as my ex would say "your wrong dumbass"



Pulled the cylinder; hey guess what! BIG OL CHUNK OF PISTON, SOB! About 1inX1in, and a couple smaller pieces, what happened to the huge 1inX3in piece? I don't know maybe it turned into all these flakes and small pieces or was blown out. Piston... looks like a dogs chew toy, underneath is black, with a ring of copper brown (im partially color blind, so im taking my friends word for all of this)









Crank looks scuffed, hopefully no huge damage was done =(







So... what did I do to deserve this? Im guessing there was too much clearance. Last top end I did about 26 hours Ride time ago, piston crown was a lovely brown and showed the transfer ports, since all I did was a re-ring and stupidly didnt even check the compression this is all on me, piston got jolted when i launched it off a dune, cracked, broke and well now im paying the price for being a dumbass

ouch, that's one nasty piston yeah they say the skirts break from too much clearance, that would be my 1st guess too. never had it happen to me though. You seem to luck out with getting free stuff but have bad luck with seizures and such, I guess it all balances out.

Yeah, just my luck, but again im still new to this and always learning =) So its all my fault for not going the extra mile and checking what is the norm.

Engine is FINALLY on its way to Hoser's, I'll be ordering a full gasket kit and seals, bearings o-rings right now if you would like, just let me know.

You can order the stuff but the orings comes in the gasket set no need to order them, the seals and bearings you have to order separately.

Yup swine flu and a couple other problems with my stomach cleared up, so im finally clean!

Gonna try for a Honda gasket kit, but if that fails or something isnt made will go with athena.

Cylinder dowel rusted in I finally got it out after messing with it for over an hour thanks to good ole PB BLaster, the dowel is junk so a new one will be used, taking my time paid off no damage to the cylinder the hole is not damaged or oversized.

The seal behind the recoil was not leaking, strange they usually do heh.

Stator cover off nice and clean inside, notice the remaining gasket material on the cases it will take a good 1/2 hr to scrape that all off and to ensure none of the fragments got on the inside most the time is spent trying to be methodical.

Crank cases split, no surprise to see all the aluminum bits and pieces .

Someone took a punch to the bottom of the cylinder and dimpled the gasket surface wonder if they had gasket sealing problems like I did in the past.

Whew well after several hours of patiently cleaning your cases, your cases are cleaned hoserized (oil mods this is a hoser exclusive no other shop performs this task to ensure better oiling for your crank bearings and your balancer assembly), all the work was performed by hand using non destructive tools unlike most modern shops that will media blast everything, its time consuming but as other have said its worth the extra effort ,I put both cases on the surfacing plate and lapped something else your local re-builder will never do, the extra time spent lapping pays off their nice and flat, ready for new bearings.

I see the parts you ordered and supplied came today so I will assemble the bottom end tomorrow night, refreshing supplying your own parts Cha-Ching X2 you pick the supplier so YOU get the best price and don't have to pay any middle man mark ups.
