Hey guys, I just stumbled across this category in the projects section so I guess I better start doing something. lol...

I have an extra faded out roof topper so I thought I would do a little experiment with it. It's pretty faded and ugly with a little light road rash. at first, I thought about wet sanding it and trying to buff it back to it's former glory so I tried a little spot and it started to come back but not with the results I was hoping for so... Plan B, :-) I still have some Swift Red & Monza Red base left from a couple of cars I painted a few years ago, so what the hell I think I'm going to just paint it.

I went over it with a red scotch pad to give it some tooth and shot a little Buff colored 2 K primer on it. I have been letting that sit for a couple of weeks, (ok truth be told, I have just been working on other things lol..) and next I plan to spread a little Evercoat over the scratches & block them out. Then another coat of primer, sand it and shoot some color & clear it. Or at least that's the plan anyhow. lol..

Here are a few pictures of what I'm started with, & I will shoot a couple of it in primer and then the next few steps when I can get back on this..

That P401 sticker looks familiar!
The sister pilot had P402:)

did the 90 pilot have the cv inboard and outboard painted green?

Green paint was NTN standard on CV untill just a few years ago.
And all Honda CVs on powersports are NTN.
The only exceptions to the green CV was on sport ATV if it was easy to see.

Now a lot of them are unpainted.
the frame will rust out long before the CV.

Chris I will take you up on that in the near future.. :-)

Ok here is a little progress on the roof panel..
I sanded the first coat of 2K & fixed the damage with a little Rage Gold & then just a skim of Evercoat. Gave it another quick coat of 2K, sanded it with 600 wet and dusted on 2 coats of a combination of Monza Red & Swift Red Base. My little concoction looked real close to my Pilot on a paint stick, but now that it's cleared I probably should have added a little more of the Swift to it. I was too lazy to set up my garage to paint so I just shot it outside even though it was a little breezy. There is a little dust in the clear,but nothing that a quick cutt with some 2000 grit wouldn't take care of but I'm not going to worry about it, it will get dirty the first time I ride anyhow. :-) I will get a pic next to my Pilot for a comparison once it dries but here is what I have so far..

I do have to say, that is looking mighty fine! Great job!
If the front honda sticker is still good, can you work around it or does it have to come off?

I should have sent you about 3 of the tops I have you could have done a batch of them :-)

Tell me about your blast cabinet, brand, cost media you use etc.

Thanks, the Honda sticker was missing a piece to start out with so I didn't worry about trying to save it.

After looking at my pics the color looks weird in the pics under my garage lights, so even though it's not really quite tack free yet I moved it back outside for a minute and took a couple more.

Its just a harbor freight cheepy. I don't even remember exactly what I gave for it but probably 200 - 250. I have been using a mixture of walnut shells & silica sand. It works about like most things from Harbor and I had to go around every d@mn seam with silicone to seal it up or the media would come out of every orifice when using it. :shock: I guess for what I use it for it does ok but I wouldn't really recommend it or buy it again.

I was looking for a inexpensive blast cabinet to clean aluminum Engine parts with I was told using the walnut shells was a non destructive way to clean aluminum, it will remove the corrosion and dirt not the metal.

One like this should work for you.

I was very impressed with the cleanliness of both of your Pilots. We need to get together for a ride soon. I've been buried in my C++ course for about a month and a half, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I should be able to break away before too much longer.

No but I did get the damn thing to go straight when the steering wheel is pointed straight...LOL! I'm not sure why the rear right has toe in. It could be a bent frame. I plan on buying a set of rear suspension arms from Dave-Co once I round up the money. His have heim joints on them and would allow me to adjust out that toe in. Then I'd have to go up front and realign the steering. However, it handles pretty nicely right now and it's good to go until I can afford the rear arms.

Right now I'm trying to get a little 1987 TRX70 up and running for my kids. I've got the Engine purring nicely. Read on the forums here that Pine Sol works to clean out carbs. Well it sure does!!! Never seen anything like it. AND it leaves a fresh pine scent! I have new rear tires on order for the quad and I'm putting a new seat cover on it (it sat outside for the past 10 years). I had to shave the front fenders because they were cracked, but it actually looks pretty sporty now. I have to admit, even though I'm over 250 pounds, I can't wait to take that little sucker for a spin!!!

And here are the last series of pictures on this little experiment. The color turned out real close to factory Honda plastic. Now, how it will hold up is anyones guess, there will always be adhesion issues when painting plastic but I think with it being up high it's less likely to get pelted with sand & gravel when following other riders so I ASSume it will be fine. Either way it was a fun little project on an otherwise junk piece of Pilot Plastic. :-)

Still should have added a tiny bit more of the Swift to the mix. lol..

That turned out really nice,now it probably doesnt match the rest of the body,it looks too new! :-)
Now your gonna have to take the fenders and body panels off and refinish them :-)

I didnt get a before picture but my roof looked like yours did in the first pictures.I picked this stuff up at walmart and tried it on it.Worked pretty good,who knows maybe armor all or anything like that would work.I sprayed 1 coat on it 3 nights in a row.I would rub down the raised part but let it soak in in the grooves.I snapped this pic the day the last day I had it.
It also worked well on the rest of the pilot plastic,made it look real nice,nice enough to steal :shock:

That looks pretty darn good sir and a heck of a lot less work. lol.. How was it for attracting dust? I used to always spray Armoral etc.. on my Vinyl top years ago after washing the 68 and it would really make the old top look look good, but always attracted dust. :(

It probably does,I didnt notice what it looked like after riding and i never got it home to wash it
