The cylinder was delivered today.
Thank you again so very much Hoser, I truly do appreciate you helping me with this. The next time you are out this way, the burgers are on me. :-)

I assembled the Top end on Friday evening and did the leek test. I put 7 lbs to it for and with in a couple of minutes it would bleed down to about 5 1/2 lbs and then hold there. After a little while i finally found the leek, it was coming from the base gasket. When I installed it I just sprayed a little copper coat on and stuck it on. So after some encouraging words from Steve, I pulled the top end back off and swapped the gasket for the one that came with my Versa kit. I bolted it back on & put 6.5 lbs to it and it held rock solid for 30 minutes. At that point I just came in for the night and left the air to it. I went back out about 10 am yesterday morning to look and it still holding a shade over 4 lbs of air, so I am fairly confident it is sealed up. :-)

The next little issue i ran into was with the Feebay Quick Shift clutch, I zapped it on the crank only to find out it was rubbing against one of the lower cooling fins on the cylinder. No big deal i just need to pull it back off and do a little grinding for clearance right?? Ok that is when i discovered I didn't have a puller that would fit this clutch. ARRGG!! So I spent the next hour and a half driving all over town trying to find a bolt that would fit this clutch. finally at NAPA I came up with one I could make work with a little creative spacer and got the clutch back off. I ground the one lower fin about an 1/8 of an inch and bolted back on, and set the Engine back into the Ody.

My daughter was really excited and to hear it run so she and worked until about 6:30 getting everything hooked back up and ready to fire up. We ended up making multiple trips to town to pick up little things like clamps etc... to wrap up the install.

We mixed up 5 gallons of 91 octane gas with Honda GN2 @ 20-1 and filled it up. before I hooked up the fuel line we squirted some premix into the carb so it wouldn't have to crank so long to pull fuel through a dry system. we came in and had a quick dinner and then back out for the moment of truth... :-)

I pulled the choke and hit the starter button and it turned over maybe 2 times before it came to life. I was flat shocked it idled perfect right out of the gate and the look on my daughter face was priceless!! We let it idle about 12 minutes with occasionally bumping the throttle for the first heat cycle. I plan head too out and fire it up again for the second heat cycle here in a few minutes, but this thing sounds so nice and is shockingly quiet, so quiet that it has me a touch worried that I am hoping the silencer isn't plugged up.

Thank you DMoneyAllstar.

I did the second heat cycle this morning, so now I want to just let it cool completely down. Compression is right about 122, which is about right for our altitude with all three layers of the head gasket installed. Once it is broke in I may pull the head back off and reseal it with only 1 layer of the gasket. I have my other 350 Ody set up this way and it was good for about another 10-12 PSI of compression. I planned to bolt the seat & belts in it to start breaking in the Engine this afternoon, but the wind is blowing like a freaking tornado around here today so I doubt we'll try and ride it today. I still need to clean & paint the skid plate & seat frame anyhow so that will give me something to do anyhow. I also have a nice pair Pilot seat belts to go in it as well.

I have now ran about a gallon & half through it still in the 1/4 throttle range. So far all seems really good except I forgot how bad the stock rear shocks are. anyhow once the bus dropped my daughter off we took both Odys out for an hour or so. It was a great time and the smile on her face was worth every penny i have spent on this thing and all the hours in the garage.

Nice job, I take my boys riding too... One has an 110 ATV the other has an XR70...you are right, the look on their face when we go out is priceless. My oldest son is about outgrown his 110 so I'll probably work with him or being a Pilot rider...

I just noticed you put her name on the steering...nice touch. Let me know if you want to personlize the plastics...I give a link to how you can really make those unique...

Congratulations Nick, excellent job.

One thing about girls, they can be fearless don't be surprised when she decides to try and pass dad.

Neither one of my 2 daughters are going fast enough unless they are ahead of me.

I wish you guys tons of fun in the sun.

Later Buddy, Steve.

Love this build thread, man! My 6-wk old daughter will get the same treatment -- she already has an 350 Oddy that her daddy is going to rebuild! lol

Wow that's looking really good I am glad she likes it I hope she gets bitten good by the offroad bug :-) I hope you get her some WORKS for the rear soon.

A single layer of head gasket would probably help a bunch with the low end torque, how is that clutch working out?

I have had good luck on air cooled machines by reusing the head gaskets just make sure the surfaces are flat and the gasket it clean then a lite coat of the spray on copper coat gasket sealer let it dry over night never a leak or failure, I have done this on all kinds of air cooled small engines except for the FL350 but don't see why it wont work, if the Engine has a copper gasket I just heat it up until its red hot then drop in cold water this softens the metal no copper coat required.

Steve,
Thank you for the kind words and your help through out the build. I am not so worried abut Sarah, she is generally fairly conservative, it's my youngest that only know knows one speed.... WFO!! :-)

DMoneyAllstar,
lol... Ut oh, sounds like you are in for it my friend. :-)

Hoser,
Thank you for the kind words. So far I like the clutch, it seems like it will really be a nice improvement over stock. It engages at a higher rpm so I think it should hit the tires nice once we can get it broke in and can give it h*ll. :-) I will probably borrow the Works shocks from the other Ody and stick them on hers until I can come up with another pair. I feel like I can handle the Pogo Stick action a lot better than she can thru the whoops out here, plus when I go ride with the guys it would be with the Pilot anyhow. Great info on the single layer head gasket, do you think I should just wait until it's fully broke in to do the swap or just go ahead do it now?? Thank you again for all your help.

Change the gasket anytime you like it should not affect Engine break in.

is there a write up somewhere on the tank rust removal? ive got a bad pilot tank in need of that

There is a fuel tank kit by Kreem that works really well. Also have tank degreaser available from the same company. The A & B are $22.50. The Fuel Tank Liner bottle is $24.95. Degreaser is $12.75.

What ball joint fit in the front arm? I powdercoated my arms and the ball joints got a little stuck. I was thinking of replacing them with new but not sure what works.

I'm not sure, I only changed the boot not the ball joint it's self.

Yesterday I swapped the head gasket over to just one layer from the 3 and installed the Works shocks from my other 350 onto this one. Today, I took her Ody out to the Rio Puerco this morning to try & put some more break in time on the Engine. I am amazed at how well this thing runs, from the ole "butt o meter" it will blow away my other 350 Ody with out even breaking a sweat. This freakin thing runs strong!! When I got home I ran another compression test on it and it is now cranking 140, I guess the rings are seated. :-)

Hoser I don't know what you did to the cylinder on this thing, but can you please, please do the same to my Pilot. :-)
