Well, started doin' the CSI on the FL800 this arvo.
Engine went knock knock into the 3rd race last Sat evening.
First up checked the plugs for colour, both fine, bit rich but always er on the side of caution.
Next compression test,PTO 115psi,Mag 145psi.
Obviously the prob is in the PTO cylinder.
I know we all like pics,so here goes till tomorrow Sun when I get stuck into it again.

That is such an awesome machine, still so impressed with the design work everywhere.

Happy Birthday(a week late I guess), you turn 35 again? lol

The rattle sound and good looking plugs has me thinking rod bearing but could be crank bearing too. Good luck, hopefully nothing major damaged.

Gazza :-)

With the compression low on one cylinder my guess is a piston hopefully just the skirt rattling a little and nothing major, since its not the mag side doubt it was a lean burn issue but rather something worn hopefully it didnt get a slug of something in the intake system.

Post subject:  Re: FL800's Engine CSI.

Hi H,
just questioning trouble shooting sounds to help me in the future...skirt slapping around would definitely make a rattle sound, but the dome/ring area will still hold that high of compression? I would assume the skirt would be loosing aluminum all over the sleeve very quickly and jam/gather into the ring grooves and on the plug, and have massive blow by, ie much lower compression??? I guess if he caught it quick enough before things got real bad its very possible.

my line of thinking was if the wrist or crank rod bearing went bad, it would also have a rattle sound but a heavier tone...more knockish??? Plug should still be clean and the piston would be lower in the sleeve, thus lowering the compression in that cylinder. I suppose the needle bearings would be really be making a mess of things.

A crank bearing(PTO) side would make a heavier knock sound and would have some heavy vibration associated right? Possibly some loud screeching if it spins the raceway in the case.

I have almost no experience with these twin sled engines but will soon. Just gathering info, not questioning your wisdom or anything. I am sure you wont take it as such. You have been running those 440 engines for a while and had issues from time to time. Thanks for any info...

Grab a beer, throw some breakfast on the barbie, and get after the Engine pull Baz! LOL

Post subject:  Re: FL800's Engine CSI.

From what I have seen bearings don't last long when they go most the big end bearings you never hear the Engine just locks up and its all over heard a few say they heard the bearing squeal but seconds later it was locked up, have heard about a few upper bearings going bad and making a noise so guess that could be the source.

Piston skirts usually first deform and collapse a little bit just over the life of use then they wear, when the piston rocks it makes noise but also each time the piston changes direction (up and down) and the piston rocks it also makes the piston rings scrub the cylinder wall more than a piston that does not rock, this is where the excess wear happens it also accelerates the wear of the ring grooves on the piston this also affects ring seal, more the piston rock the harder it is for the rings to seal .

I still hope for just a piston that would be the cheap easy fix :-)

Well guys, just finished Engine removal, then dismantle of head, cylinders etc.
Sun night now,8:05...BEER O'CLOCK! :-)
Been twisting and a turning in the Pilot all arvo, like twister game in the 70's.this 54 yr ol poor excuse of a bod is not performing like it used too!
Thanks Gaz for the BD wishes, yeah 35 I wish...ssshhhh but 54 actually, but funny thing is the head and dirty ol, mind is still performing like a 18yr old. :-)
It's not till ya look in the mirror, suplemented with the get outa bed pains, that reality bites! :-)

Anyway back to the 800,it's the crank PTO end seperated from the rest.
My guess is,from what I've learned from the internet,is that the Polaris's 800's PTO bearing is a known weak point, they now have a lager HD PTO bearing as a fix.
So,with this in mind,PTO crank bearing shits itself first, then with the PTO crank shaft being allowed to wallow around, finally lets go.
Then any pieces get sucked up into the combustion chamber and bye bye piston, rings and cylinder.
I was wrong before when I thought there was no crank end play when moving the drive clutch, thought it was just the normal play in the clutch overall.

Hoser I wish you were right, just top end,but alas I'm in for a total new Engine.
Found a place in Canada that sells short blocks with the upgraded PTO bearing for about $1700.
http://princegeorge.kijiji.ca/c-cars-ve ... Z314057193" ."..
If anyone knows others in USA please post?

Gaz in answer to your question re: noise/sound,it's like a dull knock knock, heavy definate hammer/metalic type sound, and it's LOUD,you don't have to bend down and listen for it!
I remember when talking to Ak the other day, that I said it reminded me of when the Drak's 600 went knock knock at Ab rd.
Was on my last test lap(is'nt it ALWAYS one more lap?) that when dethrottling to line up with my trailer planks, that I heard the dreaded KNOCK KNOCK.
It would idle, with more throttle, but a horrible dull loud KNOCK KNOCK.
That too had a broken crank, but more in the middle section.

Something like that work? If they will not ship to you, I can do it for you. I seen some Engine cases for under $400 too. Lots of sleds and parts in my area if there is anything I can do to help.

Baaaaahaaahaaahaaa...that's a new one for me. Classic! I'm gonna steal that line and use it all week.

Sucks your Engine blew. But at least it blew right after you were on the track using your buggy. My #1 buggy has sat on its roller dollies covered with a tarp and a cotton sheet for most of the last 3-4 months. =( And it runs great! ='(
