Are you sure you wrote this correctly, the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) had a "red" fluid in it?
Also the trans had gear oil in it?
do you have a manual by chance? It lists all the recommended oils, fluids for every temp, etc in it I would highly recommend it.I run 10w-30 in mine 100cc as per Ed at Triple EEE(MY Engine BUILDER)and I live on the east coast.
There has been many a thread here on what type to use-ie synthetic, I would highly recommend as well the "search" feature-remember to, some guys fill there crankcases up to the past the fill line on the dipstick-other like myself perfer the 100cc method, I have never had issues with oil in the starter as some have in past-so you may want to look into that when refilling the motor-it is all up to you as far as that goes.
Have you ever changed the fluids prior to this?

Hers a link for you, have you performed this mod by chance on your Engine to prevent the oil in the starter by chance?

http://pilotodyssey.com/Amsoil.htm--good oil to use for your motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? ))!!
I would read each of these threads, it can help you.

If this is a 350 trans then a good 75w90 gear oil is an acceptable choice. Gear oil as EP additives that regular "motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) oil" for cars does not. Motorcycle enigne oils have this additive as many share the trans and Engine oil for lubrication. The EP additives are a must for driveline gear trains.
