Knock seems to be coming from drive pulley area

pulley and shaft going into crankcase has some play in it if i move it up and down, but tight side to side

no oil leak at crankcase tho

Has always sounded klunky since i bought it 10 yrs ago, do they just sound like that at idle
it could be coming from Engine, not sure

kinda sounds like an Engine with off timing

original drive pulley i believe

any ideas?

The clutch on the negine or the gearbox?

There should be NO up and down play in either of them, that would imply the bearings are shot.

where the crankshaft stubs out of Engine. it doesn't have much play but it does move up and down.

whats would happen if i let it ride? worst case?

The stock clutch does knock at idle but goes away when you rev it up. I would check the balancer oil to see if its gray or metalflakey. If the knocking is the outer bering the worst case is you lose the bering and ruin the crank and have to rebuild the entire Engine. About 1000 bucks for parts and labor. You might consider removing the Engine and inspect it or have hoser inspect it. He does a great job and documents everything here on the site.

Are you running the Comet Duster 94c. They tend to knock or chirp at idle. Pull your drive pulley and see if the knock still exists at idle. Also while the clutch is removed from motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )), make sure the stem is not worn. Good luck

it does seem to knock only at idle, so guess that's normal

guess i'll try to change outer bearing before whole Engine failure. yay!!

i assume i will have to open the crankcase to do this right?

Are there other bearings, etc. that need to be replaced while doing this?

the knocking probably isn't the bearing and there are no signs of metal in oil

however, there is small amount of play at outer bearing. maybe 1/32 - 1/16 in

funny that the play is only up and down and not side to side. out of round i guess

but i should get to it before it gets me!!!

It is most prob your Ol' OEM Drive clutch. It has a lot of metal to metal contact areas that wear out over time and clatter.Cam levers, rollers, pins etc.The Powerbloc and Duster are MUCH quieter as they use a diff principle of plastic/composite type pucks that slide up ramps. No metal/metal.
Try this, with the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) OFF,grab your clutch(no Michael,I said Clutch!) and quickly twist it left/right,left/right.
Hear and feel the noise? Then it gets worse at idle.

Are you sure its the cranck with the movement? The clutch loose? What I would do is pull the Engine and take the coverplate off on the clutch side and look inside do it now because it will be costly later. Nothing worst then being miles away from anything and you have Engine failure.
