Ok ever since I seen Drakmans log chain cut at Glamis (will let him tell the story) I have been thinking about a ATV alarm and some type of Lojack system.

I figure with all the brain power this member pool has we can come up with something dirt cheap, reliable, simple.

What I am looking for is an motion alarm for each ATV so if someone moves one of the ATV's when its activated it will sound an alarm.

I made my own light setup that I put outside the bus at night its just a motion sensor you screw two light bulbs in, when someone walks by the light comes on until their is no motion for 4 minutes then the lights go off, it works good once you get it adjusted properly, found out my flag on the Pilot blowing in the wind would set it off lol

Found this link for a DYI Lojack

I know MassOdy has played with this sort of thing maybe he has some ideas?

A few years ago we were at Glamis, since we were at the dark end of the camping area i decided to chain up all my spare tires, generator and the brand new Drakart.

While we were out riding, I chained up the generator and tires. Before turning in for the night, something (probably Hoser) made me check everything over. Turns out someone had cut my chain and buried the cut ends in the sand. Would have been the perfect crime if we hadn't checked.

Since then, I quit using chains and switched to a cable, not perfect, but seems more secure.

Years ago I had a 'wired cable', that is a cable that had an alarm built into it that if cut or disconnected, the alarm would sound. It would seem that someone could use regular wire strung thru things and connected to an alarm that do the same thing.

Thanks for telling the story that was a scary situation we were parked at the end of gecko rd about 14 miles from the Mexican border, someone could have easily rolled the Drakart away from camp then towed it to a place they could figure out how to get it running.

After finding the cut chain we moved our vehicles around to make a corral and boxed everything in for the night.

Now I want to better equip myself for the next BIG West trip :-)

A trip wire to a double barrel shot gun would be the hot setup but I really don't want blood splatter all over my Pilot lol

I have a cable I use with locks but still want something to alert me when someone is close to my stuff, be nice to catch mutts in the act

We always use cables and lock everything together and two years ago we started using these combined with the cable locks if you cut the cable or pull it apart the alarm will go off.

I fly allot so im always bored reading the Skymall and I wonder if this would work for the Tazcar? If someone snagged it you could go online and help find it.

Im sure they are but im a eBay junkie I can tell you they work well though they have lived through about 5 trips to the dunes which is more than I can say for our portable stereo, step and slideout on the motorhome........ the sand likes to play havoc with everything.

The plastic coated cable alarm seems to me to be the best bet.

The skymall GPS device is a datalogger. So you would need to get it back to see where it went.

A cheap cell phone with a gps added to your existing cell plan with autotrack service will allow you to track it. for as long as it is in cell range, gps coverage, and has power.

Park all the toys in a cross pattern and weld the bumpers together.

Sears used to sell alarms for tool boxes. Bump the box when it is on and set the alarm off. Not sure if they still have them or not.

Is an alarm going to be effective if no one is around to hear it? It would be useful at night when you are sleeping, but if you are off riding then the thieves could come in with cordless sawzalls/grinders and take what they want. If someone wants it bad enough they will get it, doesn't matter what kind of alarm or security is on it.

99% of theft occurs at night at the dunes it has happened during the day but not to often. they like to get you when your sleeping so anything to alert you has to help.

I just bought this one. I havnt had a chance to use it yet. The alarm is not as loud as I wished but the cable is long enough we can slip it inside the RV window. Could definetly hear it if you were napping in a tent.

well i guess this is the only benefit of living in the middle east; i can not only leave my quad unguarded but i can also park my '09 Ford Explorer outside the supermarket, leave the keys in the ignition, Engine running and do an hour shop and noone would steal it.

the punishment far exceeds the crime. theft would earn someone a period in jail (which definately arent as nice as a US or UK lockup) then after 7-30 days they would deport you (after freezing your bank accounts) to you home country along with any member of family you have here (just to set an example).

...still nothing compared to Saudi Arabia where hanging, beheading and public stoning are all still accepted punishments for crimes (not sure if they still cut peoples hands off for theft though).

but back in the UK when i had my R6 i used a disc lock (heavy duty Oxford lock) and a bright coloured heavy chain (i always thought it was better to let criminals see it was locked up so they wouldn't even attempt to steal it, didnt want them making a mess of my front disc trying to pry off a disc lock)
