Just how fast should a 85 FL 350 really run flat out on a road? I have been curious and figured mine felt like it would run about 60 mph, but tonight I finally conned my wife into trying to pace me with our Yukon and she said she let off at 70 mph and I was still pulling away. Is that even possible or could she have been mistaken? I wanted to do it again but she was afraid some one would call the police on us since we were on a back road not far from our home. I know it is probably a lot faster on a dirt road than in the sandy river bottom I normally ride, but I was shocked when she said it was that fast.

Have any of you checked the top end speed on your 350's?

With my Ody set up with undersized 22" rear tires, I managed to get mine up to 60.2mph before I ran out of dirt road. I believe I may have been able to get a couple more miles per hour but like I said I ran out of road. All depending on how much you weigh and the condition of the road you were on I would believe at least 65 mph.

Get yourself a GPS unit and measure it that way.

Check your speed with a GPS. I was surprised at 60.2 mph. It didn't feel like it was that fast.

Thanks guys, I suspected she might have been padding the speed a bit. I have been pestering her to try & pace me for a few weeks now and she finally gave in just to shut me up yesterday. My odyssey has 24" tires on the rear and we were on a paved road about a half mile long. She had my two daughters with her and wasn't exactly happy to be doing it. I don't have a GPS, so maybe I can find someone with a motorcycle with a speedo to run with me.

Thanks again

You guys were all right on the top speed of my 350, it doesn't run over 70mph. i borrowed a GPS from a friend and strapped it to the steering wheel this afternoon and went out by myself and opened it up again on the same stretch of road. I was going to try and hold my camera and video it, but since I am right handed, and a big clutse I couldn't seem to get get that to work, I just took a pic of the max speed when I got back home. I made two runs and at a little over 50 mph on the first pass i ran it out of gas and switch over to Reserve to get it running again & make the second pass.

Anyway here are the results.....

67.8 is a very respectical speed for an Ody! I take it that this was a flat asphalt road?

Thanks, yes it was a fairly flat paved road. It did start to sputter on the top end a bit today that I don't remember it doing yesterday, so I hope I didn't hurt it running it out of fuel on the first try. I pulled the plug and ran a compression test on it and it still seems to have the same 120 psi that it did the day I bought it, so I think it is probably ok.

You may want to do a plug chop and see what kind of condition your plug is in at wide open throttle.

A plug chop is used to determine how well the fuel mix is burning within your cylinder determining weather you have a lean or rich condition. Running in a lean condition will cause overheating and premature Engine failure. Running too rich is a waste of fuel and will lead to heavy carbon build up on the top of your piston, exhaust ports and your expansion chamber. You want a nice balance of fuel and air to assure you have proper performance and not running too lean or too rich.

You mentioned you have a sputter on top end that you didn't notice before. You need to investigate this issue because you may be running too lean or rich on the top end. Too lean is a very dangerous condition and will lead to premature Engine failure!

Do a search on the site here for two things.
1.) How to do a plug chop.
2.) How to read a spark plug to tell if you are running rich or too lean.

Once you have read this and done your plug chops then you will need to read up on jetting your carb to get optimum performance with adequate oiling of your Engine parts.

Plug chop...
Drive with the throttle wide open... hit the red kill switch to shut off motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) while thumb has throttle wide open remove thumb and place in Nuetral and come to a stop... After cooling, and cleaning remove spark plug and look at the color of the tip and white ceramic... should be a paper bag brown color!!! white is not good black is not good!!!
