I have a torn cv cover.... On the 89 pilot
1. Does this just happen!
2. Should I check anything in particular?
3. Replacement covers? Stock vs...
4. Can I keep them in place w hose clamps?
Anything I missed? Any advice wanted...

And damn does this make a mess! Grease everywhere!

And yes I realized the topic subject is lots of fun...

Pilot parts info here viewforum.php?f=37

I like the OEM boots seems all the boot problems I have seen over the years are from after market that does not fit right and seal well.

You can reuse the OEM bands if your careful they are different sizes inboard and out board so don't swap them.

Generally the boots are not a problem and last a long time most the factory boots the rubber is starting to show its age so split some are damaged by something on the trail.

Start looking for CV grease its getting hard to find since most are selling kits and kits come with grease.

Think the service manual says just used chassis grease but I always used the CV grease with the "molly" additive stuff is black some of the CV grease I have seen in the "kits" (most from china) the grease is scary looking it separates smells like nothing I have ever smelled before like no other grease or lube I ever seen before Chinese is prolly sucking the fat out of dead bodies before they bury them then packaging up as CV grease to sell to us fat lazy Americans who wanted "cheap".

I have purchased several aftermarket cv kits off ebay seller name was cvman with great success. I use them on my 2800 pilot, CA Pilot and have never had an issue. The kit comes with bands, grease packets and a thicker boot so if you plan on using the stock OEM it might fight you some. If for some reason you prefer to use the bands provided KEEP the old stock OEM'S for sure!!!!!!
Rockford Driveline still makes cv boot kits as well for the Pilots too.

I take a old knife and use it to gently pry up the tabs they bent over, I bet it up enough I can get a small screwdriver blade in and bend the tabs up only enough you can release the band, you can reuse the bands many time or until the tab you bend breaks off.

When you reinstall you gently bend the tabs back down as far as you can easily then take a pliers and gently squeeze them together to finish them off.

Have a least one new large roll of quality paper towels ready when you change these you will have a nice mess lmao
