Thanks for allowing me into this forum just bought a fl250 did a little work runs great. I am confused about the wires from the Engine there are only 2 and 1 goes to coil and other is not attached to anything. I see in book should be 4 wires and a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) unit can you tell me what I am missing

Thanks for any help

AHHHH - only 2 wires. guess what - you do not have a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) - You have points. One goes to the coil and the other should go to the kill switch. I know 1977 and 78 had points CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) started I think 79 or 80.

Edit - correction - looks like the black wire goes to the coil and the kill switch and the yellow wire goes to the light switch.

I also believe 77 and 78 are 6v point system - 79 and 80 are 12v point systems and the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) started in 81.

Please correct me if I wrong.

I you have serial number on the frame and ther serial number on the Engine (they are different) I can tell you what year they are. I have the list of serial numbers per year out in the shop. I posted on here someplace.

What makes you think it is a 84? Can you post a picture or 2? - we like pictures.

I'm not sayng he lied - did not mean that at all - it just alot of people know very little about these machines.

Please do not run that Engine without a air filter. Do have a 3 way valve in the fuel line gas in from the pump then out to the carb and a tee going to the fill neck?

I can not tell for sure - the down tubes on the roll cage do not look like honda. the serial numbers will teel for sure.

Your fl250 odyssey is not a pos. you have to think of it as a labor of love. If you are working on it to make money forget it. This is a hobby. If you heart is not in it forget it. i sugeset you start a thread under projects and keep adding to it as you go. Lot of good knowledable guys here who have been through it.

I will offer you this warning. these machine are addicting - I started off witha 1977 fl250 and rebuilt it from the frame up and then almost bought a fl350, but the guy would not take may offer - then i bought a pilot fl400 and like it so much I came across anothe pilot and bought it. so you have been warned. :-)

Lot of the race guys back in the day converted them to points from CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) so they could easily adjust ignition timing to match their mods.

CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) non adjustable

Now most people are scared of points because they are 100% clueless about them and want CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) points were used for 100 years and were 100% reliable every once and a while you would hear complaints about points but 99% of them complaints were because of lack of maintenance and owners stupidity not the design, for example Ody owners would see the rubber boot that seals the recoil is ripped and rather than spend 6 bux for a new one keep riding until dirt and water got into the points well at that point it was all Hondas fault for using points not the clueless/lazy Ody owner :-)

The only thing wrong with points usually is the person working on them and all their mental blocks they carry with them.

Amen to that! The Fl250 is the "gateway buggy". LOL

I started with a non-running FL250 in 50 pieces and converted it to a yamaha twin 340 sled Engine. Sold it. Bought an FL250 and FL350 pair, and tuned & sold the FL250. That FL350 is "my baby" now after some investment. Then bought 3 more FL350's, a rotax donor sled, built a air/hydraulic tube bender, and hoarded two 8" shelves of FL350 parts. Just waiting for the winter slow down so I can hop back into the builder seat!

Get this FL250 running, leak-check it, dial in the carb, and run the p!ss out of it! :-) If you need rear fenders, a cheap/quick solution is to use trailer fenders from a place like Tractor Supply (TSC).

after doing some testing about the 2 wires one does come from points I think cause condenser is at coil but the other is not a kill wire it has voltage so I think I need some kind of regulator

did you download the manual? The wiring diagram is in the back of the book.

After looking at the diagram in the manual - black goes to the coil and also the kill switch - yellow goes to the light switch.

I beleive the older point syatems are 6 V.

Perhaps you have a manual for the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) model. You may just need an earlier manual.
