 Post subject: Hey Shifter- shocks

I was going through the parts box today and found my shock shims here is what
I have.

2- rebound #90
2- rebound #70
4- compression #40
I have 6 other sets that are not marked and I would have to measure to see what
they are exactly, my guess would be at least one is a #60 rebound and a #30
compression, using the 6 sets I think we can mix and match to build something.

Hoser, where are the measurements of your FOX air shocks? I have the program set up waiting to plug in the numbers.

I have #40 comp, #60 rebound ,,,,,,,,,

Was suggested that i try #60 compression, #90 rebound ,,,,,,,, are these stacks you mention ?
My rememberance is that they told me to use 5-10-15 shim groups to get this ?? ,,,,,,,,,, tom

My rears are 31.5" long with 12" of travel - stock ,,,,,,,,,,,
If i remember right, i will shim the travel down to 8",,,,,,,,,,,
I cannot remember the susp. arm measurements any more ? arm length 16.5" ?? and the
mount will be 12" from inside ?? mount is now on the outside end ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, tom

I am thinking it would be best to have the new rear suspension arms built before re-valving the
shocks, so that i can put in the correct spacers when we re-valve them. I am not sure about the
length of the spacer, until i get the new arms done and mount the shocks , but i would guess that
i will need a 4" spacer. i am thinking of trying 8" of travel and hope that will give me 14" of wheel
travel. Until i get the time to make new arms, and mount the shocks in their new location, it will
be hard to tell what i really need.
I also found out the the 954 is a bit more powerful than the 600 was :-( ,,,,,,, 2 of the 6
sprocket bolts are missing, and the 4 left are loose. I also need a new sprocket with 8 more teeth
to lower my gear ratio. As it was, i could not go slower than about 10mph or it would stall the
motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )). Sprocket Specialists figured than 8 teeth should raise my rpm about 1,000. This should be

the old one?

Although the ratios do not show a big difference, the 600 has a lower first gear, the 954 has a
a higher ratio throughout the gears. The 600 had a top speed of 138 mph, the 954 is somewhere
around 180+ The 600 had a 10,500 redline, and the 954 has an 11,500 redline. At 8,000 rpm
with the same gearing from the Beast, the calculator says the 600 is doing 25 mph, and the 954
is going 38 mph ,,,,, due to different internal gearing. THIS IS ONE BIG NEGATIVE ,,,, that i did
not figure on. For the belt drive people, it means less shifting :-) - 2nd gear peaks at 74 mph ,,,
for the shifter people ,,,, it means less shifting - one up one down and you might get away with
staying in second gear most of the time using the clutch a little in tight corners.
I would prefer to go to a 60 tooth rear sprocket to get more gears to use, but every added tooth
means more diameter to the sprocket and hanging lower in the frame, necessitating a raising of
the diff for clearance, losing travel along the way. I will stay with the 54 tooth, and see what it
brings in shiftability. The quickness of the torque, might not allow time for speed to build up
before the next corner ?? As i have done in the past rebuilds,,,,, try, and try again if you don't
like it. Tinkering is half the fun. ,,,,,,,,
I would like to be ready for June 5th-6th ------ which is a dual race weekend ,,,,,,,
Bedford, Indiana - saturday (Ptrailking), and Spring Valley Sunday ,,,,
if i all is in one piece :-) Jan should be ready also, It would be great to see Sidewinder Bill
with his R6 there also. If Moskito has that open, it could be a wild race ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, tom

Using just 1st and 2nd would be cool you would not have to ratchet up and down,
but kinda takes the 'shifter' out of it, maybe we call you 'no shifter' ?
I don't see you getting over 70 mph all that often in this part of the world any ways.

Why not make a jack shaft so you can get more gearing options, just flip you
differential over, then you can run smaller sprockets, you have the extra power
so loosing 5-10 hp in the extra chain and sprockets wont matter.

How is your foot and skull doing from the crash?

My thoughts are 50+ is good for what we do, but i do like opening it up at Silver Lake every so
often, but then i have to wait for the rest to catch up anyway :-( ,,,,,,,,,,
I have considered the jack shaft idea, which would give infinite gearing possibilities ,,,,,,
but as far as i have been able to figure out, i would have to lengthen my wheelbase to fit it all in
back. Up is not directly available for the chain, because of case clearances. I would have to
relocate the brake disc to the jackshaft, which would not be bad, just more work. I think that
i am close with a 60 tooth, but not sure about ground clearance loss ?? I hate to drop 2" of
travel to get another useable gear ??

motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) - 8,000 rpm - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 11,500 rpm

600 - 46 rooth 25-32-44-55-88-76 mph
954 - 46 tooth 38-54-65-74-81-88
954 - 54 tooth 30-42-50-57-63-68
954 - 60 tooth 27-37-45-52-56-61 39-54-65-74-81-88

I lose an inch of travel going to the 54 tooth - 2" diameter change = 1" loss
and another 1" going up to a 60 tooth sprocket ,,,,,,,,, so i am in a tough spot at the moment
trying to decide what is best. The 60 tooth sounds like the best setup, but is the cost in lost travel
