I decided to make some jetting changes since the last Badlands trip proved that the jetting was way too rich, I started out by turning the air screw out 1/4 turn and lowering the needle one notch, I took it around the yard a few laps then the neighbor kid showed up on his three wheeler so time to let my kid do the driving. My son made about 4-5 laps around the yard when one of the rear shocks decided to give out, time to buy new springs for the BILSTEIN shocks I got from Redrider, Red suggested getting them from http://www.pitstopusa.com but first I needed to figure out what the spring rate is for the current springs so I did some searching and found a Spring Rate Calculator the old spring measures 2-3/4" OD and the spring wire diameter is .265 and their is 13 active coils on the spring giving me a spring rate of 34.7635 The spring length is 11" Looking at the shock it appears that the end of the shock where the piston attaches to broke off, I will cut the shock apart to verify. Looks like I will be going back to dual shocks now. I took the portable ban saw and cut the shock apart, just as I suspected the end of the shaft broke off (blue arrow) you can see the oil was all black and nasty, too bad these shocks were not serviceable the valving in this shock is a joke as you can see by the 2 shims they installed, the shaft is bent and is probably what caused the shaft to break since it would put the piston into a bind as the shock traveled through its stroke, there was a plastic bag that wrapped around the center cylinder I assume this contained nitrogen at one time or another and was used as a bladder. There was a considerable amount of wear on the seal and shaft bearing, again I suspect the bent shaft played a large part of the shocks failure. I used the old spring and the coil over kit I bought when I bought the shocks to get it back up and running, soon as I decide on a spring rate I will order new springs. hmmm back to 2 shocks once again, less weight to haul around, I bet a new single Works shock would work perfect. After testing I found using the old spring on the Blistine shock works great...
