well scince i got my first pilot
was wondering several things

#1 belt
#2reeds
#3intake
#4head

#1 what size belt is on you guys fl400?
mine has an dayco belt MAX1121M2 40 7/8"X1 1/4"
is this correct?

it just seams too loose when its on the pulley?
it has an power block clutch and the stock driven

#2
reeds i have what appears to be an v-force 2 reed cadge

is there any benefit to switching them out with the v-force delta 3 reeds on my odyssey?
also you don't have to rejet for changing reeds?

#3 intake

i personally don't care for the stretched rubber intake

does any company make an billet intake for the fl400?

#4 head

is there any + or - to having the ATV shaved head?
or should i go to an speed chaser head ?

all i should have to do is just pull the old one and install the other one with an new head gasket?

also fo head gaskets who's the best one to get other than honda?

After seeing all the botched heads that has come from ATVR I would go with the speedchaser head.

The problem even with a all stock head is the casting is not a ridged as the speedchaser head and under the right conditions can flex and when it does the head gasket starts leaking.

Right conditions = running the shit out of your Pilot on a warm day 80-90 degrees under heavy loads like soft sand and tall hills the Engine gets hot enough and the head flexes enough to allow the head gasket to start leaking, when it leaks it usually blows compression into the cooling system then forces coolant out of the over flow on he ground you have no idea its happen while riding.

This all happens before the HOT light on the dash comes on.

This has happen to me at least 3 times on two different Pilots both unmodified and modified stock head then switched to a cool head this cured the problem.

The head is kinda pricey but time you factor in the cost of the head gasket and the loss ride time while on a riding trip its well worth it, over the years I have bought a total of 4 cool heads, bought a prodesign cool head, one from Duncan racing and two from speedchaser, the two from speedchaser was to replace the first two I had sold, might end up buying a 3rd speedchaser head for the basket case Pilot.

Go with whats reliable and has the best longevity on the reeds, the power difference between the best and worse reeds on a Pilot is not enough to really notice in the real world.

I always ran the stock rubber intake elbow on a 39mm carb modified stock air box.

I always run the 4x4 tuff belts or the stock Honda belt and stay away from the others but I have a good stock of belts will probably be stuck running the others when my stock runs out?

If you get a CR250 intake the carb will fit in much easier, it just puts it closer to the belyt guard because it is centered instead of offset.

IIRC, only a few years were straight intakes. The older 78-80 Elsinore ones as mentioned in the previously linked posts

The later model CR250 intake boots are angled

There is a guy in Australia who makes some pretty impressive looking straight CR250 boots, but they might be too long and it's port matched to a Vforce 3 style stuffer I believe

He just e-mailed me and I deleted it, but it was about $50 for the intake, $20 shipping to US and he could toss in a stuffer for $5 if you had the reed valve
