NOTE: A few years after I ended up making a longer bushing in the lathe because of the wear on the lower part of the shaft, the longer bushing allowed for the new bushing to ride on the unworn part of the shaft. The first 1" of the bushing ID was matched to the wear of the worn part of the shaft the rest of the bushing was matched to the unworn part of the shaft.

I greased the shaft most the way up, sort of a reservoir of lubricant so on hot days by the use of bumps and jumps it would self lubricate the bushing at the bottom of the shaft.
