Picked up a 89 Pilot last night, I've been watching for a "fixer upper" to come up for sale for about a year now. Been close on a few but I finally found the right one. Looks to be mostly complete but the right side of the Engine is apart and the gas tank is out at the moment. The PO told me that the Honda shop told him something could be machined to make it work but it could only be done once? fly wheel? I'm not sure so I guess I'll have to figure it out. At this point I'm thinking it will need a battery, air filter, fluids changed, carb rebuilt, possible flywheel, decals, mirrors, and other misc hardware. I inspected the rear rear end, axles, radius arms, and suspension best I could in the dark. I noticed the bottom side of the trans was covered in oil but I'm not sure where its coming from. Plastics are all in good shape but the right side panel has been repaired. Any advice or suggested updates or mods for the pilot would be helpful, I'm definitely more familiar with the 350 than the 400 so I'm just trying to get a jump on the learning curve. More pictures to come.

Sounds like your just cheap.
Looking foreword to the thread on it.
Right off the bat I gota say yank the axels and grease them. Seems everyone neglects that until it is to late. That's what I have notice here on this site. Only the seasoned guys seem to pull the axel and grease them up before there is a huge issue.

More pics of the parts that have been taken off. Lots of metal in the fly wheel and stator looks damaged.

Thanks, I'm going to try and get a parts list worked up this weekend, CV's will need to be rebuilt I think also so that should be fun. I just hop the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) is good.

Looks like the Engine side is missing the outer right cover, pull start asm, flywheel, stator, water pump shaft, water pump, starter bendix... couple other things maybe you have those things? I'd be highly suspect of that stator the way it looks, especially since the flywheel looks done - its probably hit the stator. The ring-gear behind the flywheel looks alright. That should press off once you remove the allen bolts.

You should be able to pressure test the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) as its still should react sealed. I'm thinking you should pull that motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) out since you don't have the tank/seat as its only about 5~7 bolts and she'll lift out forward.

Pressure test the Engine first. If it passed then probably ok.
Remove the head to check under it. Put the piston at TDC (Top Dead Center) and look as best you can at the ring-end-gap. It should only be about .5mm wide. If its much too wide and out of spec then consider rebuilding.... There should be no dings, dents, metal bits, parts, or scars anywhere within the combustion chamber. If there is, you have a lot to do to fix it...

... Or change project direction and go with a full swap. I'd say if you need to basically rebuild that Engine, you're looking at about $1200 for rebuild parts, including crank and cylinder service (I just did all this to mine and so that cost is close to correct), that is NOT including the hard parts you may be missing, flywheel, stator, tank. You could be in for a $2k basketcase with that Engine which is swap territory IMO. You can actually find running sleds for $1000 depending, and be well on your way to a swap.

I like your project.

You can probably sell off the good parts of that Engine to help pay for your swap.
Crank, carb, cases, cylinder, head, etc....
What did you pay for this?

As far as i can tell everything is there except rear skid plate, and mirrors. I'd like to keep this one stock if possible but I agree that a full assessment should be done of the Engine. I will most likely rebuild the CV's because the boots are cracked and the bottom side of the transmission is wet with oil. I'm not sure when I will have time for this project but I'd like to start getting parts together in the next 2 weeks if you know anyone who has pilot parts for sale :)

From what I can see in the provided pictures you need to remove the Engine and it needs completely disassembled and inspected PO made no effort to keep the Engine sealed you can see where wasp has built nest inside the locator dowel pins for the side case.

You need a flywheel, stator, pickup sensor, water pump. If the balancer bearings are rusted then you will need them too, I bet they are.

Replace the CV boots DO NOT rebuild the CV joints unless they feel lose or have dirt or rust inside replacement parts will NOT be as strong as the OEM regardless what CV experts try to tell you, if someone talks you into changing the CV internals SAVE ALL THE OLD PARTS I will buy them..

If the fuel pump pulse tube and carb slide was left open you probably need the crankshaft bearings and a new rod installed you will probably find rust on the cylinder wall.

I am guessing your going to have at least $1000 bux into the Engine by time you get done.

You need special tools to rebuild the Engine.

I have documented many Pilot Engine CSI's and rebuilds use them to your advantage https://www.google.com/search?ei=JDHVWv ... dIqKM6qgYQ
Transmission seals probably leaking.

$38?!? Need info on these, that's a great deal vs buying overpriced oem from eBay. Where can we find these?

I like how far those mirrors stick out too! Maybe you can actually see what's behind you. :-)

Could be just me, but I bet something like this would be real close and would work.
It's also reversible, which means it would fit either side.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pilot-Automoti ... Swbc5awpDs
No pic of the back side but it looks to be rounded similar to the Pilot mirror or the one posted by mforbes.

Edit: Never mind -- the back side is all wrong.

Edit again: Many years ago when the first backup cameras came onto the market, I thought about mounting one on my formula race car. It was impossible to see behind you because of the wing. I wanted to mount the camera on the wing and have a screen mounted on my dashboard. Never got around to it. I bet this idea would work well on an oddy. Mount the camera under the roof lid above your helmet to protect it from a roll over and the screen mounted just above the steering wheel.
For thirty bucks how can you lose ?? https://www.amazon.com/LeeKooLuu-Monito ... kup+camera
It only has a 4.5 inch screen but you can get a 6 or 7 inch screen unit for about $120.

I like the cool factor of a BU cam but not sure how it would hold up to the "all weather" treatment, bouncing around and mud punishment it would get on the pilot though. Been getting by without mirrors for the last year or two but there are times when you have to unbuckle to get see behind you well enough to make sure you don't back into a ditch when turning around.
I've been keeping my eye open for alternatives to stock and these are as close as I've seen.
