Hey guys, I am in search of everything to swap my points to a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) I am sick of points on this thing. Just want to change it all and be over it! There is a Kit on ebay minus the flywheel I am thinking about buying. But then run Into the problem of not having a flywheel for 1981-1984 fl250. If you have the parts I need PM me or msg me here.
Thanks.

I'd just clean or replace the points and ride on. Points aren't bad to deal with. Much easier to get the points system functioning correctly than to convert it.

I enjoy having an Engine with points. Something so simple about it. Old school ya know. What's happening to cause you to want to switch?

I am just getting mad at the points I adjust them, Adjsut them again, And adjust them again and it still has weak spark and now I stripped the adjustment screw out on the points. Just making me mad. Points are ok I have three wheelers vintage sleds, and I have never had this many problems.

Have you check the condenser and coil per the manual? Keep it simple - try a new spark plug. make sure it is grounded well when you test the spark, that can cause a weak spark when testing it outside the head. If still weak try unscrewing the spark plug cap from the wire and trim off about 1/4" of the wire and screw the cap back on. If still weak you could check the timing the manual has detailed instructions. It also possible the key could be partially sheared changing the timing. You could also disconnect the kill switch at the wires coming out of the Engine and then check spark. Once you get the spark right you should be good to go. It's fun chasing these problems down and very doable. Going to CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) will probably be more work and certainly more money. Could be something more serious like a bad stator or flywheel but most likely something simple. If you have specific questions post them up. Pictures are always welcome.

All the problems I have seen on the FL250 with points is dirt and metal particles from the recoil getting into the points, the dirt problem came from the owner not keeping the rubber boot in good shape that seals out the dirt and or not maintaining the gasket between the recoil and the Engine I use to take my recoil off once a year and inspect it and blow out the area with compressed air never had any ignition problems.

On a side note my 1955 IH CUB tractor has points dad bought this tractor in 1974 we have never touched the ignition on it, runs perfect, has spent the last 15 years setting out in the weather, have another 1970 IH Cub bought it 7 years ago havent touched the points on it, it sets out in the weather about 6 months a year.

Points are good and trouble free if you can keep them clean now is probably time to pull the flywheel and clean everything good then seal it up good.

Can you still get a new rubber boot for the recoil?

Most local dealers will have a flywheel puller for 10-15 bux

Yeah My sleds I clean the points and let them go years without opening it back up. I have a feeling I'm just going to end up ordering new points, Condenser and putting it back together. I have bypassed all the excess stuff on it and just weak spark. So now Is time to find a few parts and figure out how to remove a screw. Busy turning my atc 300r into a race machine at this point though. So I have time to find parts.
