Time to do oddzilla #2 cause oddzilla #1 is done.

I have zero time on oddzilla #1. LOL.
Just drove it down the street the other day and it didn't go poofkaboom so that's good enough. LOL.
I love doing Engine rebuilds anyways.
Have a new house I built in 2012 and it has a big shop attached.
Draw a 36'w by 60'L rectangle and draw a line right down the middle. That's a wall.
One half is living quarters and the other half is the shop. Don't even have to go outside just walk out the door and your in the shop. The shop is divided by two garage doors. Outside garage door then 20' in is another garage door. This separates the parking spot and the main shop. That way when I drive out with the truck the main shop area still stays warm. All my design. Has it's own bathroom, heater, big screen, pool/craps table and mandatory beer fridge. Weird cause I don't drink. It's for all my drunken buddies and my old man.

Not really sure what you need to know but about this project but let me know by tomorrow cause I am gona start welding the head. I already welded the center tube for sparkplug as you can see.
Basically used a 6'' by 1/4'' wall alum. tube and cut what I need. I like the heavy wall because it is easier to weld will a spool gun. Don't own a tig machine. You will also see that this time I left one of the original fins in place for a divider instead of cutting them all off. You will also have to make sure the holes line up perfectly with the head studs below. You do this by placing the head on the top piece and reaching through the head holes for studs and tracing with a felt pen. Then drill and tap for the 1/2'' plugs. You can see more photos if you search for "making a water cooled head out of an air cooled head". It was for Oddzilla #1.
You must also pressure test the center tube BEFORE you weld up head to check for leaks.

This is the pressure testing unit I built.
It uses a chopped sparkplug modified for a pipe fitting so you can screw on a regulator.
I use about 20psi for the tests. You plug the top with a rubber stopper from the sink and a clamp.
Then squirt some dish soap around weld. As you can see here I have a leak. This leak is in a very difficult place to fix. When I am all done I smear JB Weld around this area (Don't do this until you have welded the large ring, but not the top plate).
Just a side note here. You will notice the "divider" or fin I left on the head. You must do this so that the water will flow around the head and not just take the easy route in and straight out. You MUST do this to the cylinder as well but the 6" tube is close to the cylinder because the hole saw for it is just big enough. For the cylinder I just make a "divider" with a little weld.

You will notice several witness marks with felt pen on some of the pieces.
These pieces must line up correctly because the head bolts are not equally spaced and the top plate holes must line up with these bolts or you can't get at them with a socket. You will also need a thin wall socket so that it can get through the 1/2'' pipe plug holes.

what spool gun are you using. i have a millermatic 185 with the spoolmate gun. I just bought a bottle of argon and plan to start having some fun.

My son bought a Millermatic 250 I been waiting on him to buy the spool gun attachment and some aluminum I want to try it on a old power block clutch, weld up the clutch faces where they are worn out and then turn them back down in the lathe to restore, the rest of the clutch is in great shape, bushing is like new.

If I ever get mine finished it will be a good relief, my torch went out on my tig and finally got another one in along with another cooler but I get to use it when I have breaks at work so it is going slow. I'm running a Miller spoolmate 100

Yeah I know all about it. It takes weeks to finish because some kind of poo always comes up.
Hang in there this is not a five minute project. One of the frustrating things is yet to come for you.
When you pressure test the cylinder and then the head you WILL have leaks that have to be plugged.
That's why I did it the way I did to minimize the leak potential. If I were to offer any advice it would be to make sure all of the old fin surfaces that you are going to weld directly on must be ground down smooth for the new piece. I tried to weld the sparkplug tube on Oddzilla #1 on top of a few small bumps of old fin. FN thing leaked on every one. It was a nightmare. I actually had to cut the head in half again to try to seal the leaks. If you look close at one of the pics in one of these posts you can see it. The pic is locate under "Oddzilla is running" post. When you pressure test the head you will have to plug the head bolt holes. I did this by just putting a bolt with washers in each one. Some air will by pass but so what, all you wana do is check the welds with soap water. You will have to put each bolt through the top plate using one of those long flexible grab tools. Not sure of the real name for it is but it has four finger that come out of the end of the flexible cable. You won't be able to get your paws in there. Make sure the top plate holes line up with the head stud holes before you weld it or you will be doing it again.

Thanks for the advice. And you are right it ain't a fast job by no means. I dread the leak test, I may have so many that I throw it away and start over. LOL The new tig torch I got is bigger than the one before and that made it harder to get in between the tubes so there will be leaks. But I will get it. The biggest thing I was looking for was how you done the pipe around the spark plug, I see now that you off set it to one side. I wish I had done that but I didn't have a piece that large laying around so I angled mine. That made it harder to weld on some tubes. But live and learn! I will post some pics. when I get it ready. You have to offset the sparkplug tube so that you can get a wrench in.
Unless it is a large tube. The oddy head angles the sparkplug.
