More details here: http://www.pilotodyssey.com/PO/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=14040

Prices for the FL400R intake manifold that accepts Mikuni 60/70mm flanges:

In 6061/T6: $116.00, shipped to the lower US48

Rubber flange is not included. **BUT WE HAVE ORGANIZED A GROUP BUY FOR $14.60 PER FLANGE FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY**

Lead-time is 2-4 weeks, but first part in 6061 could be available in 4-5 days.

If any are left, evilBay prices will be +$20.

Some information about the 6061 & 7075 aluminum (you'll quickly discover you get a pretty good bang for your 16-bucks with 7075):[/b]

T651 temper 7075 has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 67,000–78,000 psi (462–538 MPa) and yield strength of 54,000–67,000 psi (372–462 MPa). It has a failure elongation of 3–9%. The 51 suffix has no bearing on the heat treatment but denotes that the material is stress relieved by controlled stretching. Not recommended for anodizing.

T6 temper 6061 has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 42,000 psi (300 MPa) and yield strength of at least 35,000 psi (241 MPa). More typical values are 45,000 psi (310 MPa) and 40,000 psi (275 MPa), respectively.[4] In thicknesses of 0.250 inch (6.35 mm) or less, it has elongation of 8% or more; in thicker sections, it has elongation of 10%.

I know you explained the differences between 6061 and 7075 but they seem close enough to me. Can you explain it like I'm stupid why one is better than the other?? :-)

Oh ya. I will take 2.

Do you have a view of the backside? And is 6061 and 7075 stronger than cast?

The 7075 is 40%+ stronger than the 6061. Both are plenty strong, but anyone running a beast of a Pilot may want the added security of the 7075. But 6061 is just fine.

Typical cast material (A356.2/T6, 535.2, 319.1) is NOT as strong as the 6061/T6 bar. This is per a local professional investment casting shop. Just can't get the same molecular structure in a cast part like you can billet tempered bar.

Tensile strength:
- Cast A356.2/T6 = 38,000 psi
- Cast A535.2 = 42,000 psi on paper (but 32,000 psi on the test bench)
- Cast A319.1/T6 = 31,000 psi
- 6061/T6 bar = 42,000-45,000 psi
- 7075/T651 bar = 67,000-78,000 psi

Added later: The tooling cost alone for this part to be made via investment casting is over $3k. Material is another $30-$40 per part. And it doesn't even include post-cast machining for the threaded holes, etc. If demand was more like 200-500-1000 units, casting would save us all a few $'s. That's why you'll see someone like Moose or other brands able to sell aluminum intake plates for more popular engines for like $30-$40 -- mass production with large demand.

Hey, that's a personal question! Ohhh, the manifold...yes. lol

The exit port is the same dimension as the stock manifold port. Per the math, the exit port has more area than a 39mm ID carb, hence you won't have any restriction with flow up to that size carb.

ALSO...remeber that running a larger-than-stock carb will require some plumbing changes since the stock airbox elbow is made to fit the stock carb's inlet side OD. Any larger carb will have too large an inlet OD to fit that elbow.

Looks like everyone is in for the 6061, I'll take my 2 in 6061 also.

Any suggestions on where the rubber flange can be bought?

I'll take 2 in 6061 for the Pilot.

Let us know where the best deal is on the genuine mikuni manifolds if your researching please.

OKAY, THIS PROJECT IS 100% -GO- AS I JUST DROPPED OFF PAYMENT AT THE MACHINE SHOP. All in 6061/T6 aluminum (unless I get a request for 7075 here in the next week). Lead-time is 2-3 weeks for the whole order, but I expect to have enough to cover the current orders (PO.com) within 2wks.

If you're one of the select few who have requested a FL400 intake manifold, please send me your $116 payment sometime between now and then. Please send a "friend or family" payment to me at Paypal account danauxter2@yahoo.com. if you cannot send a "fee-less" payment to me, I can accept USPS money orders, or, you will need to cover the fee I get charged (I can send/receive $ free since my account is linked to a bank account & verified).

...going fast! If we surpass the initial 25-unit intake order this week, I can tack on a few more if needed since they haven't yet started mfg'ing.

Once they are made and in my possession, I will be listing the excess on evilbay for +$20. But if you want one after that point in time, I can still offer the $116 shipped price so as long as we handle it outside of evilBay. If you buy through evilbay, I cannot offer the lower price.

Many thanks!

Dan A.

EVERYONE ORDERING A PILOT INTAKE MANIFOLD...FLANGE GROUP BUY???

If you want (unless someone else is already organizing one), I will organize a Group Buy for the flanges through Powersportsuperstore.com. I can buy all the flanges (all of one or a mix of each), and then just stick them in the same box as the manifold (costs no extra to ship in same box!). It can save everyone a gallon of circa 2006 gas (Midwest), lol. Hey...a couple bucks is a couple bucks!

Through the website, shipping is charged as follows:

(5) flanges = $2.95 shipping total, or $0.59 shipping EACH (saves $2.36 per flange)

(10) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $.89 shipping EACH (doesn't make sense to order in increments of 10)

(15) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.59 shipping EACH (saves $2.36 per flange)

(16) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.56 shipping EACH (saves $2.39 per flange)

(17) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.53 shipping EACH (saves $2.42 per flange)

(18) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.50 shipping EACH (saves $2.45 per flange)

(19) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.47 shipping EACH (saves $2.48 per flange)

(20) flanges = $8.99 shipping total, or $0.45 shipping EACH (saves $2.50 per flange)
,

Flange for stock carb, $14.24: http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/Mikuni-Rubber-Flange-Typical-Carb-Size-30-thru-3-p/4459734.htm

Flange for 36-39mm carbs, $14.24: http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/Mikuni-Rubber-Flange-Typical-Carb-Size-36-and-38-p/4135453.htm

NEXT... since this is an additional job very similar to the FL350 parts, the machine shop has quoted the Pilot parts with a "not to exceed" price. If they knock a couple $'s off the estimated price, I will pass that exact sum along to Buyers ONLY from PO.com.

LASTLY... if you want to pay via check or money order, please let me know. Its not a problem. You just need to let me know ahead of time. I have a bank app on my phone and deposit checks from anywhere with a cell signal, and they generally post the next day. Since we've got some lead-time here on parts, snail-mail payment isn't an issue. This is for non-evilBay deals only.

Many thanks,

Dan A.

Yep, you are IN Mud. I will update the numbers above. I will PM you the total.

Also...we're up to 19 flanges, so the flange Group Buy is certainly ON. :-) I'm going to move forward with a price of $14.70 per flange ($14.24 + $0.45 s/h). This should knock $2.50 off per person. :-) :-)

ALSO...for some who are buying more than one intake, I will adjust shipping where I can (since you paid shipping x2). I need to see if I can get 2 flanges & 2 intakes in a small flat-rate box. If I can, I will certainly kickback the $ difference (in addition to any price-drops if the shop beats their estimate).

I will forward everyone their totals soon, and we can settle out before shipping. But for now, consider the prices to be $116 per intake and $14/70 per flange.

Hoping for an update from the shop today/tomorrow regarding where the parts sit in their build queue.

Many thanks,

Dan A.

The flange order has been placed with PowerSportSuperStore.com. :-)

I bought 11 of the VM34's and 16 of the VM36's. Since I ordered more than I originally planned, price with shipping came out to $14.57 each.

Update:

Saw the first actual Pilot intake today. They're going to smooth out a little ridge in the flow port, but I should have a complete finished part before the end of the day. Goes to show that anyone can make something in CAD, but it takes more talent to actually create the actual part on the machine. Hoping to have preview pics up as early as this evening. :-) :-) :-) :-)
