Hello all. I am new to odysseys. I bought one a year ago, had it out a few times last season and it was a blast. I have broken something in my pull starter though. When I pull out the rope it comes out with no effort. It isn't turning the Engine over any more. It goes back in fine. So in and out is fine, just not engaging and turning the Engine over. I am pretty sure from reading on here that what I need is a:

#28446-809-810 1977-1984 FL250 ODYSSEY RECOIL SPRING

Last year I did some online searching for a "how to" for rebuilding a pull starter, thought I had found some good one but they aren't working any more. So if anyone knows where to point me for that that would be great. From what I remember the spring I have to fix isn't that far "in" as far as taking the pull starter apart goes. Hoping to not have to mess with the big recoil spring coil if I can get away without it. If not a how to or video maybe just a expanded diagram or something... I'll go at it in the dark if I have to, but I figured this is a problem many have had so I wanted to ask.

Thanks in advance for your time,
P_T

I would take it apart and see if the spring is broken. They are usually easy to repair. Make sure you clean up all the parts and replace the rope if it is worn. Lube the spring and the dogs when you reassemble. the hardest part is getting the right amount of pre-tension on the spring.

Clymer sells a manual for the fl250. I will have to look at mine to see what is covered on the pull start. this is the best picture I can find.

Take it apart 1 piece at a time and take pics at every step. That way you can see exactly how it all went together.

I didn't beat you by much. :-) Your PDF is a better scan and easier to read.

Thanks guys, that is just what I needed. I'll try to get it pulled off and apart in the next few days so I can tell for sure that spring is the issue.

Is there someone around here to get parts from or should I just try my luck on ebay?

Thanks again,
P_T

I believe the spring is still available from Honda. partzilla.com usually offers the best price. just search for "fl250 starter"

I believe the spring is like $13.00.

be sure to order everything you need so you don't pay shipping more than once.

I think the ebay guy wants 30 or so for the spring. not need to pay that, although ebay is a goo source if you need a gasket for the pull start as Honda has discontinued.

Post up some pictures if you have trouble. You can it working again.

Great to know, I would have overpaid on ebay. If it is anything more than I am thinking I will definitely post some pics.

Thanks again guys for all the help!

If you want the complete manual then use the search box here. Just type in "manuals" and
there will be short cuts to a site where you can download it for free.

Thanks, I've found a shared google doc, but I can't figure out how to download my own "local" copy yet, but it is getting me through.

So, I was thinking of attempting to remove the starter on my lunch break toady. Is it a bad job? Is it just the 3 bolts and it's off, or do I have to loosen the Engine mounts so I can move it over to clear the rails around it when taking it off? I would just go at it, but I'm stuck here at work for a few more hours before I can take a lunch anyway so I figured I would ask.

It's just those three bolts. It shouldn't take you more than 10 mins, and there's no need to remove the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )), but removing the wheel and fender will make it more accessible.
