I haven't had it long, i like fixing things and rare machines, i have 2 ysr50's and a yamaha big wheel 350 as well. I remember seeing these as a kid on the showroom floors of the local Honda dealer, I always wanted one. When I found this sitting in a storage area for several years I just had to have it. I tore it apart cleaned everything up, didn't paint anything except the pipe and silencer as it had a lot of surface rust. Rode it a couple of time to make sure all is well. Now it is time to move onto my BW350 project.
The tire still holds air, i have a tire machine and even put a set of front sand tires on it when I took it to the dunes. After the dunes I switched it back to the knobbies. No tube and no leaks. I have the front bumper too but it is smashed pretty good, I have a tubing bender and will probably make one if I have time.
Let me know if you have anymore questions,
Crazyotto

Can you point me in the direction of trail systems around the area where you live? My daughter lives in the north west part of Vegas and I will be riding that area this fall some time.

I like the wheeler pass area or cold creek area, it is about 30 miles from North West Las Vegas, lots of elevation changes and has desert, woods, sand, rock portion of the trails. You also need to have your machine registered and a spark arrestor in case you run into the forest ranger.

I'm curious why you put a new piston and rings in it and yet you say it's still on the original bore. Can ya tell us why you re did a top end then?

I wasn't sure how the Pilot was treated before me. I bought it at a storage auction and the only thing the storage place could tell me was it was stored for several years. I'm an old 2 stroke racer and I used to replace my top end every 25 hours or so and would go over my bikes to make sure everything was still in top shape.
Since this Pilot hadn't been ran in several years, I didn't know what maintenance had been performed, what 2 stroke oil was used and what ratio they were running I did a complete top end tear down. Everything looked good including the crank, everything was with-in tolerances. I honed the cylinder and the crosshatches are still visible on the cylinder. After all, top end kits are not that expensive and for the peace of mind, worth the cost.
I bought this thing as I remember seeing them on the show room floor as a kid, never rode in one but heard stories about how awesome they were. I went through the complete machine and everything works as it should, cleaned the tank, carb, put new Boyseen reeds (didn't need them but for peace of mind, old reeds get brittle), Rode it around a couple of times and now putting it up for sale.
As I get older, I feel I have more fun tinkering around with the older machines and bringing them back to the glory days than I do riding them. I have 2 Yamaha YSR 50's and a Yamaha Big Wheel 350 I am working on now to restore to their glory days and need more room.
