Well, what can I say. Since the day I got my first oddy and joined this site, I wanted a big bore Engine with lots of power. I did more research then should be allowed by law and at one point, I was so frustrated I told the wife I'm selling it all, I was serious to.. It was about that time I started to focus on the suspension upgrades I've been doing and figured, hell with it, if need be I'll put a sled Engine in it. Well low and behold I saw an add on craigslist for a FL350 for sale, with extra parts. As I looked at the ad, I noticed all the parts in the back ground....Bingo something caught my eye. I recognized a liquid cooled cylinder in the pic that I had seen on this board. So, I called the guy and struck a deal. A complete FL350 with a shit ton of extra parts....some pretty rare I must admit, and the water cooled cylinder was part of the package. I drove several hours handed over some cash and brought everything home. I got home pretty late and unloaded the truck....I stood staring at one of the short blocks thinking, something is off with this. Then it hit me, I didn't just get the big bore cylinder, I got the complete Engine. So the next day I call this guy and ask where he got the cylinder and where he got the short block. I told him it was a complete race Engine. This guy starts to argue with me saying no it isn't...I bought the cylinder in one part of town and the short block in another... WTF both parts in the same town and no one realized it was the same Engine. Well i did. The Engine belonged to Doug Goodenough and it was all there. Oh, it needed work, but it was all there. It's been 2 years since buying this Engine, and on occasion I've thought it was a bad omen. I've been though more shit in my quest to restore this thing....Oh my have I. I 'll go through the build process... Let see where it takes us.

Yes meth ---- something is off there.
That looks like a stock Honda cylinder with an 89mm sleeve and port work.
How can you stuff an 89mm sleeve in a stock cylinder ??
Is that actually possible ??
If so then what is the piston ??
If so then what is the number of the LA sleeve you buy ??
Has oddy crank so ain't that stroke to short ??
18mm wrist pin -- what piston has that ??
Maybe I am not see things right.
This could be a fun post.

EDIT: Something is off with that bottom end too. It does not look like it has been trimmed to accept the larger sleeve.

Cases have also been bored to except the larger cylinder/sleeve. Have the cases been trenched? If not might consider it given the increase volume/needs.

At 89mm, any idea what piston this will take? I'm guessing CR500.

My DASA 850ss jetski motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) takes 89mm pistons. They are Wiseco flat top pistons, and they are special cut pistons for DASA - making them light-weight like the old style Wiseco. Maybe these will work somehow?

From what I know about these. They used yz 490 pistons. They have the same wrist pin as the stock 350. The skirt has to be cut down though. All the big bores started off as 350 and bored out for the bigger sleeve and piston. Some had KX or CR 500 exhaust and intakes graft on.

Shoubadaba. Hasn’t been around for a while but he’s got a few of these engines and knows a lot about them

Pretty sure it was 490 like fully said.

Did shouba have them or nuke-em?

Someone here bought all the Briggs engines. They were really trick.

I think nukem has the Briggs engines. Shouba and Nukem both have a few of these big bore race engines

Ah, sorry to keep everyone waiting. My wife and I drove 12 hours down south to see my daughter for Thanksgiving. I can respond but more pics will be forthcoming once I'm home.

So:
- CO take a closer look at those cases. Look at the front edge thickness in the area that the sleeve slides into the cases. It has been opened up, a lot! I'll post a pic with measurements when I get home.
-Theses set ups used several different pistons depending on who built a particular Engine: KX500, YZ490 and Macio490. The pistons need a little massaging before use.
-The base cylinders everyone used (FOR THE MOST PART....) was the FL350 cylinder. No one made a sleeve that could be dropped in. All the sleeves were custom made, with a large number of them being made by LA Sleeve or Northwestern Sleeve (John Tice). I will detail my experiences with both companies and their role in bringing this back to life.

Let me say this up front. The "NEW" Engine is assembled and in my buggy already. This post will detail everything...and I mean all the bullshit, I went through to make this happen. I ended up meeting, speaking to, bartering with, pissing off, becoming friends with guys all over the world who actually ran these back in the day, as I gathered information the way I usually do, constantly asking, why?.

I learned a lot and came up with more ideas then I'll ever put to use. But I met my goal of a modern take on the old super lite power plant.

Here's a better pic of the case. It's cleaned up a little but you can see where it was enlarged for the bigger sleeve to fit in. I'll gather more cool pics of things I found on the Engine. Then explain what the game plan was to bring it back to life.

As I dove into the short block I noticed the starter ring was machined down and lightened and the fly wheel was machined down and the timing changed.

Yes I can see that machining down the ring gear and flywheel would make a big difference on an oddy because they are such low powered.
When I was a teen back in the late 70's racing our Datsun, we had a machined flywheel. It really helped the Engine spin up.
Since they went that far, why not drill out bolts as well ?? I did that on my dirt bike in the early 80's when I was racing those. I sucked at racing a dirt bike. It didn't help me LOL.
It may be only grams for each bolt but the best way to save one pound is to find 454 places to find 1 gram.

Are you going to dyno this when its running?

Or did you? Its running right?

I think the Briggs were around 80hp, If I remember reading right?

Do you expect that from this?

In addition to the bottom end items I found, here are some pictures of the cylinder and head. The cylinder is a base FL350 that has been worked over. It's obvious the water jacket was added including the internal water passage design for transferring coolant to the head, but there are other mods. The overall height of the cylinder was cut down to bring the piston at TDC (Top Dead Center) way closer to the deck. The factory liner that is in these jugs is actually diamond shaped as many of you know. When installing a factory style replacement sleeve you end up with some of the factory liner still in place. Well when installing the custom sleeve enough material is removed to completely remove any traces of the factory liner and then some. Also, there is a ton of porting work done to these. At this point I have 4 different cylinders that BV manufactured. All of them whether smallish bore or true big bore run almost the same duration for each style of port. Meaning the 89mm bore has the same exhaust duration as the 82mm bore and same for transfers and intake.

When I got this cylinder it had already been repaired as there was an apparent break that occurred, and the sleeve was at it's max bore of 89mm and was cracked. So much for a clean up.

I need to take a couple shots of the head, couldn't find them on my computer.

Bullnerd, yes the Engine is in my buggy and running. I haven't dyno'd it yet, but most likely will. I don't believe this one will make 80hp, but I can say ....it makes a whole lot more then then the Engine I had in it... ALOT MORE... :)

What does the piston look like? Possibly a 4-corner seizure. Clearanced correctly or just worn?

Where is the cylinder cracked?

Crank cases look mighty thin. What we do in the jetski world is back-fill cases with 2-part epoxy to strengthen them and get the gasket mating area larger. Also looks like a hole/leak in the corner of the cases, or is that a sharpie marking? Strange. May cause a weird void during pressure changes.

Well, I never did get to see the piston, it was long gone. Wait till I post pics of the head, it will be clear why the piston was MIA... The cylinder had a hair line crack longitudinally in the center of the bore. The cylinder pics were taken after I cleaned the liner with hydrochloric acid to remove the melted piston...

The mark on the case is sharpie.

I can't believe how thin that sleeve is. I wonder if a stock sleeve could be bored out to fit a stock yz 490 piston, that's an 87mm piston, that's boring a sleeve out another 5mm, but its only 2.5mm on each side of the bore, might be possible, the stock sleeve is pretty thick

Fully, unfortunately just boring the factory sleeve out will not work. If you look at the picture you can see I measured a factory cylinder I have and the bottom outside dimension is less then the 87mm piston. I didn't calculate what the sleeve thickness was in the big bore when I received it,but apparently it started at 87mm and the last bore was 89mm. I thought it was a little on the thin side also and the new one was made thicker.

Here are a couple pics of the head I promised. There must have been some partying going on in the cylinder....Looks like someone tried to clean up some damage to the comp chamber....maybe to finish a race weekend or something? Never the less this head wasn't used and a new one was machined.

Apologies, I'm posting when I can but life has me super busy. So I came up with a plan to redo the Engine. Have the cylinder fixed, machine a new set of cases, do a new crank, machine a new head and make a new billet 3rd bearing side cover. After much research it seemed I had 2 options for redoing the custom sleeve. I could call LA Sleeve and have them do it, or reach out to John Tice of Northwestern Sleeve.

I contacted John Tice who was the original fabricator of the cylinder and discussed replacing the sleeve. I will say this right here and now, all said and done it was not a pleasant experience at all. I sent the cylinder and head and was quoted a price of $300 to make the new sleeve. Well after over 2 months had passed, Mr. Tice had not even opened the box containing my parts, yet he always had a nice sunny attitude and comment, I started to think he was a little of his rocker. Fast forward 15 months and there was ZERO progress on getting my stuff done. Needless to say things fell apart quickly and it wasn't till I told him I was flying from the east coast to his shop on the west coast the next day that I was able to get him to ship my parts back. Yes, I was dead serious and was in the process of buying a plane ticket and a member of this site had agreed to pick me up at the airport and drive me to Mr. Tice's shop, when I was told my parts would ship the same day. They did ship and I received them several days later. Hum...continue or give up, well I continued and the next call was to Dave at LA Sleeve.

WOW some people huh!!! Especially when your saying take my money, fix my parts. He must have been crazy. Who can you trust these days, such a shame.

I’m glad your sticking with it and hopefully you’ll have better luck with LA sleeve.

15 months? I don't typically have the patience to wait more than a week or two for most things. Good on you for that.
