Well I had a oddy come up for sale about 15 miles from me and didn’t have any takers for 3-4 months. I finally got tired of seeing it listed and figured I would go check it out and throw him an offer if in good shape. Guy said it would rev but limited power. Carb was removed, guy thought the top end needed a rebuild but in my opinion the top end looks good - only a physical inspection so far. Neutral safety switch still connected and I’m guessing that’s the real issue. ALOT of dust, but this thing is in really great shape, ridden but not ridden hard. Has all the stock fenders, and in really great shape, I removed and will likely throw them in storage-don’t want to tear them up!

Cage and roof lid look straight so I bet it was never rolled or tipped over.
Front bumper not dented so this thing was not run hard I bet.
Several bits missing but that ok, minor stuff.
Looks like original tires. I wonder if it still has the original piston ??
Obviously kept outside by looking at that seat, probably under a tarp.

My money is on a possible bad belt or probably a seized clutch (Driven or main).
It has been sitting outside so there is a good possibility the shivs are unable to shift because they are rusted.

The guy I picked it up from had a huge pole barn but he said he bought from a friend I wonder if he kept it outside covered at some point. I have a few projects to finish before it but hopefully it’s something relatively simple, thx CO.

Thanks Curtis! I love these things so much I’m likely displacing most of my two wheeled toys!

Why not use the fenders. I couldn’t imagine not having them on.

Agreed. Never understood this mentality. What are you saving them for? They are meant to be used. You can save them for after you crush your frame flipping 20 times and then what good are they?

I always put side panels on my carts, I’ve never been a fan of the fenders and most of the ones I’ve run across are in really rough shape. Selling them I could probably cover most of the money I already have in the cart.

Will probably list them here in the next couple of weeks. Don’t have any good pics of them yet.

So quick question about this unit. The stock carb is pretty ugly, and I will try and clean up and will try and rebuild but I also thought it might be fun to experiment with some other parts I don’t have experience with. My better half grabbed this flat slide carb for this buggy. Is the only way to identify what model TM carb it is is to measure it? Shouldn’t it have some identifier somewhere? Also any advice when installing this, any other adjustments I will need to make? Any other specific parts I’ll need?

As always, Thanks all!!!

That is definitely a flat slide mikuni carb. An older one at that. You should be able to find other markings on it that will help determine the size. You can always measure it.

Do you know what machine the carb came off of?

Some things to check are what size main and pilot jet are currently installed.

What modifications will be done to the fl350. High flow intake, aftermarket exhaust, reeds, port work....

That will determine what size jets you will want to use and you will want to have a few on hand to tune the carb when installed.

I have a 39mm mikuni flat slide on one of my machines and it works really well. I believe that CO uses mikuni as well.

-Curtis

Curtis much appreciated! Right now I will likely use it on the newly purchased machine, and that machine is stock right now. Will it work on a stock machine, or should I put this carb on one of the modified machines? The other machines have larger bores, minimal porting work, upgraded reeds, water cooled heads.

Thanks again!

It will work on all the machines. You will need to change the jets to allow proper fuel/air mix for each machine. The jets add more or less fuel, depending on the machine, you adjust accordingly. YouTube some carb jetting videos to better understand.

You may need a kit to get your choke & throttle cable to work with this carb as the stock carb is a keihin.

Okay will brush up on some information about carbs and jetting. I’m definitely no expert so could use all the help I can get, YouTube is typically super helpful. Thanks Curtis.

I planned on just getting a choke unit that I could install right on the carb itself. That way I don’t have to customize a choke cable. Anyone done that setup before, looks super easy.

I will look at those kits for the flat slide carbs, if anyone has done that modification before please let me know. I’ll search the site here to see if information on the boards.

That appears to be a very early TM oval slide carb. It also has a very funky float bowl.
I don't think you can get certain parts for that carb anymore but I may be wrong.
Even jetsrus.com don't have any info on that thing.
The closest jetsrus has is this: https://jetsrus.com/carburetor/carb_mik ... parts.html
However the float bowl is flat on this one and not oval shaped like yours.
But the slide is oval probably just like yours is gona be.

On my new style TM flat slides there is a stamp on it that tells you which TM38 style you got. This is very important because there a several styles of TM38's and there is a 100 point difference in the main jets so you have to know which one you got or you will blow up your machine. I don't see any stamp on that carb you are showing there but if you clean it good you may see one. It appears to be vintage.
Below is a photo of the stamp on one of my carbs.

I'm still learning as well.... thanks CO! :-)

Also, the manual carb choke is a great solution. As shown in CO's photo.

that's what I was looking for, some markings. I will clean it up, and see if it’s stamped somewhere on it. Thanks! I looked at your intake, looks like from a previous thread you custom made that, is that right?

I think what I thought would be a simple project might be over my pay grade!!! I agree it looks like that carb is vintage-I can’t find anything on it either. Bowl is a very strange shape.

Thanks guys!!!

Homemade intake --- that's right.
Made from vitaflex60 two part rubber. Same stuff they use in the movie industry.

Well I hate to tell ya but this thing is gona cost.
Anybody that buys one of these things and thinks they can just put gas in it an go, is out of their FKN mind.
What you got there is a GREAT starter project machine. Everything looks straight. Most of the important bits are there.

What I see is:
1) Engine tear down -- possible rings -- pressure/vacuum test ($$ unknown)
2) Gas tank removal and cleaning at a rad shop ($40 ??)
3) new fuel pump and flow test ($50)
4) new seat belts ($100)
5) wrist restraints ($50 from blue sky para)
6) shock savers ($50 make your own)
7) rear springs -- so you don't hurt your back ($200 if you can find them -- Honda shop ??)
8) side skirts to keep the mud out ($50 from local home improve store)
9) transmission oil changed and checked for metal in the oil ( 2 quarts -- $20 synthetic)
10) axels pulled and splines greased and u-joints checked for play (free if joints ok, if not $80 each)
11) steering rod ends checked for play and replaced -- guaranteed these will be shot ($20 each (x's 4))
12) shifter taken apart cleaned and greased -- cables lubed (free)
13) brake system checked -- fluid replaced -- possible master cyl rebuild (most likely -- $100) plus rear pads ($50)
14) new tires ($300-400)

And this is just a quick list.

This one is number 3, so I know the cost and time that goes into these machines. I think this one will be only a backup. I don’t think I’ll pump $ into this machine like I have with the other two. My friends and I are all getting older and the bikes sometimes are just too risky. Our saying is have as much fun as you’re able - but remember we all have to go to work on Monday!

I’ll update once I get into things. So far haven’t spent much time up at the lake to be able to work on this one. Wishing it was at home, home so I could look it over sooner. Again thanks.

Can’t find any markings on the carb, not quite sure the plan for that carb now.

Yup, I have no doubt you know how much these cost.
When I look at it though, this thing is gona cost. Just can't see any other way around it.
I was just commenting that sometimes guys buy these machines and have no clue what the real cost is. They think you can just air up the tires, dump some gas in and go.
I got three of them as well. One is just a spare in case one machine has issues, or I lend it to a buddy when we go riding.
