I just baught my first odyssey a couple weeks ago and am having starter problems. when i hit the key it sounds like its engaging for a second and then it sounds like it backs off right away. I thought maybe they batttery was to weak but i put the jump pack on it but got the same results. Any ideas or suggestions? I love this website by the way. Been finding all sorts of good info.

I had the same problem. It was a week starter.

Even though I hard enough Battery juice and so forth the starter motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) itself was unable to perform.

I'd pull the plug and get great turn over. But with the Engine compression no go.

Start with pulling the strater motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) and over haul it. I never got back to this starter after swapping it out. But the stator needed turning as a recall.

Getting the starter out is the hardest part. Doing the clean up / overhaul is not too hard at all.

The manual is your best friend,

I agree, sounds like a bad starter too, on 350s there is an issue where oil can get into the starter motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) and foul it. There is a mod to stop it from happening, i will try to find, maybe odysalvage.com or search.

if oil fouled just clean out the windings, housing ect., lube the bearings and go with it

also make sure all connections are good and clean, battery , starter ect.

The link is found on my tech page http://pilotodyssey.com/tech.htm

If you have a impact wrench you wont need the holder tool.... I have taken a few off the FL250 and was able to hold the pulley with one hand and turn the wrench with the other..

I was kinda thinking that an impact would zip it off. Are there any other tips or things i should do while i have it apart. Besides putting on new brake pads. Now to find a new starter. Or just keep pull starting it...

Pull the exisiting electric starter out. It may not be compeltely trashed. Might just need a cleaning and a rebuild.

Rebuild kits are available nad they include a sealed bearing to keep the oil from infiltrating.

I used a place in VIrginia I beleive for my rebuild kit. When I go home tonight I'll look up there contact information.

If your totally strapped I may be able to help on the kit. I did at one point have a spare set. There was also some talk last month regarding inexpensive chinese starters that may work as a replacement.

You can contact Chris at Zorko's 724-397-2036 for the rebuild kit or a complete starter for either the FL400 or FL350. Tell him Doug sent you and he will sell you one (they normally don't sell to the general public). rebuild kit should be around 30 or 35 dollars.

Keep in mind the FL350 starter is really expensive because it includes the gear reduction and drive in one unit, where the Pilot starter is just the starter the gear reduction and drive is in side the right side case cover.

I am having the exact same problem with my Pilot right now, I have however found my problem inside the motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) and have a new drive and flywheel gear on order.

No instructions are included, these kits are really designed for the profressional rebuilder. But the process is pretty straight forward and has been documented by several people on this site including pictures and step by step instructions.

You could always pull your starter, buy the rebuild kit and take both of them to one of your local automotive electrical or alternator/starter rebuilders in your area. If you want to go this route and don't know of a good rebuilder in your area, let me know what city you are in and I could suggest a few for you to work with in your area.

One peice of advice, if you don't think you are up to the job of rebuilding the starter, don't even take it apart. Just take the whole thing to the local rebuilder and ask him to install the kit you have. When I was a rebuider, I just loved the guy that brought in a bunch of parts in a box asking me to fix his mess. He always got just little suprise on the bill for me having to figure out what damage he had done to the starter while taking it apart.

Good luck on the rebuild...

I just looked on Ebay and the kits are available there for about $30.00 plus 6.50 shipping. Here is one auction # 320030003614.

Sorry, I don't know how to post a like on this site.

Stockers is another great place if you are on the West coast. I have known Elwood for years, a great guy to deal with.

Do I understand Massody's reply that a sealed bearing will keep the oil out of the starter too? If so that sounds alot easier than the other mods. I had my starter rebuilt by a local shop that modified some partshe had laying around to make it work. Now the starter works but I have no spark with the starter but it isfine with the pull start. After reading all that I could find on this I'm thinking I should get the correct rebuild kit & rebuild it myself.
Thanks
Shubey

Have heard of this before, not sure whats going on (maybe MassOdy knows?) but if the starter is drawing too much load on the battery it affects the spark, the Engine will be turning over real fast but no spark then you pull it with the pull start and it starts right up, only think I can think of is the current draw of the starter affects the stator output, EMF maybe? Magnatic pulse from a nuke test?

A simple rebuild of the starter and ensure all battery connections and cables are clean usually cures the problem.

We do have a nuke plant near where I grew up & not far from where I live now so maybe it's just me.
