350 is still a deal for parts alone. Beyond that if your pockets are still heavy you can splurge on farroffroads kits for the front suspension and a rotax conversion. i got a running one for 2k but every single thing i have looked at in closer detail has needed some form of repair so far. not to mention that the guy before me had a knack of not putting nuts and bolts back so even the test drive was sketch in hindsight.

Welcome new guy.
You may feel that this forum is dead but you would only be half right.
Take a look at the number of views this thread has gotten.
It's got nearly 100 views. So what does this mean ?
It means there is a lot of ghosting going on.
Many of us have been here for more than a decade and we have gotten old. I'm already 64 and many other long time members are the sameish age. Yes some have left for good and some have even passed away. Many others just ghost and read the threads. Traffic is way down though so you are some what correct.
The other part you got wrong is that there is a tremendous amount of information on this site. It's second to NONE with accurate info, just use the search box.

Searching for info:
The best way to find something here is to use the search box above.
In the search box type ONE word ONLY and hit enter. If you don't you will get to many hits.
When the list of threads comes up there will be another search box there on the right.
In that box type ONE word ONLY. Keep doing this as many times as you want until you have narrowed it down. Some common words will be ignored like "Engine" "Honda" etc.
Also at the very bottom of any thread you read will be an area where there a similar threads to the one you are reading. You can click on them to read.

Here is some of the info on this site, check out this thread. You can click on anything highlighted in blue and download it.

Please post pictures of your progress on this project.
With pictures we can see things and point them out.

Well it sounds like we are VERY similar and you are only 12 yrs younger than me.
Lets take these one at a time.

I said that because you said the site was dead. You are correct.
That means not many here to answer your questions. When I'm on I'll answer them.

You may see several of my posts here when someone wants to buy an oddy, I spell it out for them. We are not used car salesmen here. We call it for what it is.

When I was 16 yrs old (1976) I started working in a millwright shop in a sawmill. I've worked heavy industry my entire life. Now I'm 64 and will get all my pensions in about 7 months. I've worked in some incredible places and worked on some VERY big machinery. Creativity was word of the trade.

I was EXACTLY the same when I saw an oddy in the show room in 1985. I was racing sports cars back then and saw the oddy as an off road race car. I asked the dealer how much. He said $3500. I was floored !
A new dirt bike at the time was $1500. So I just bought a new 1985 KXT tecate three wheeler. God damn that thing was fast. It was the fastest 3 wheeler ever made I think.
I used to buy a new dirt bike every year with my holiday pay from work.
I've owned a lot of machines, mostly Kawasaki's. Also owned many new Can-Am dirt bikes.
The machines I really loved and wish I still had was my Can-Am mx3 pumpkin and the Yamaha TY175.
Always wanted a Montessa but never owned one.

Used to race sports cars starting in 1977 when I was 17.
Won two championships and set two track records.
In 1982 I qualified to go to the nationals at Mid Ohio.
We couldn't go because we ran out of money. I'm still angry about that even at my age now. I should have taken a loan from the bank to do it. Now I'll never know if I could have been North American champion in GT3.

If the damage to the case is limited to just a hole between the balancer portion and the crankcase, it may be possible to make a repair using something like JB weld and some donor aluminum, I say like JB weld because I believe there is better stuff, more fuel resistant available. I would only recommend if the damage is not structural and supporting a bearing race. Also, if you do this, be sure to photo document and be sure to disclose to any future buyers.

Ok I had the same problem when I tried to post. I had turned on a setting to check IP addresses to see if new users were reported as spammers. I went here https://www.spamhaus.org/ entered my IP address and it has me listed as a spammer on ONE SITE, must be this one lol, I do not spam, it must be buggy or something. Anyways I turned that feature off since it was NOT stopping the spammers.

Sorry for the hassle.

So I got the FL350 I bought as a basket case running. Everything turned out ok, had to get a used bottom end off ebay, had my cylinder bored to the next size which is 81mm.

The used bottom end cleaned up well, replaced gaskets, seals, pressure and vacuum tested.

After break in, heat cycles, etc. It runs really rich. The top end power is down and it smokes like a freight train at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) (Wide Open Throttle). It had a 45 pilot, 142 main, 3rd clip position. Pump gas 93 octane, 20:1 Bel-Ray non synthetic. Uni pod filter (it didn't come with an air box)

I leaned it out to 135, 42, 2nd clip and it gained power. It might run perfect at one very small throttle position.
Plug looks good, like medium dark chocolate.

Has stock exhaust. Has a 2 gallon fuel tank 10" above the carb. No pump.

Stock 32mm carb, new float valve from jets r us, 16mm float height. New manual choke plunger (cable operated one was missing)

I used an IR temp gun (which I'm not a fan of) to check temps. Don't remember exact numbers because they weren't unusual the head was approx 250-260, exhaust flange not much higher. The silencer area above the cleanout plate was in the 400 range, which I thought was odd.

Will the extra displacement with the stock carb need to be jetted leaner on these engines? I've done big bore engines before that ran fine with the stock jetting.

I'm at sea level, like less than 20' and it's been in the low 90's with 75-85% humidity.

AND THEN THIS HAPPENED
Carb manifold wasn't dry rotted but it came loose from the aluminum----Melted piston. I shut it off early, I'd say badly scuffed on the exhaust side. I know deep down some of you will be just tickled to death to hear this.

So I ordered a 36mm PWK, all this past week as parts were coming in I was prepping and putting it back together. The cylinder cleaned right up- just aluminum transfer.

Got it running and heat cycled yesterday on the RTV'd back together stock manifold. Then today I put on my home made intake manifold with the PWK and got some jetting done. It runs. It's hard to follow Wiseco's break in procedure when you're stall speed is 'high' , I need to connect a tach to see. But it ruined the old belt, the new one seems to stall higher.

I need to find or make another intake manifold. It seems like you can't get a straight shot to the reed cage and have the carb level AND fit an air filter on unless you take a plate and weld a pipe to it. My intake matches reed cage dimensions but points too far up in my opinion, and in order to level it, it would need to be even longer.

that's the update.

I'm not an expert, but a couple of things pop out from what you are saying.
I can't imagine why you would need to lean it out, especially if you are running a UNI filter without an airbox and and a stock exhaust. I have one that is completely stock (including airbox) and after it warms up, it runs great. It does take a while to warm up though. It also has an 80mm Wieseco and stock carb/jets. The small displacement change shouldn't be enough to require a jetting change and surely wouldn't require you to lean it out.
You mentioned you are running a gravity-fed tank, and you also mentioned you got a new float valve. I just want to clarify if you got the right float valve for a gravity-fed application. Because that could also easily kill an Engine.

They list one specifically for the 1985 FL350, it looks like my old one, it doesn't look like any other Keihin float valve I have (2000 CR250, 1986 CR80, 2003 TRX400EX)
I needed a new one because the spring on the bottom didn't work, was collapsed.

I don't know why it was running so rich. I have since bought, installed and mostly jetted a new carburetor. The new carb says specifically it's not designed for use with a fuel pump.
And it burned another piston, both BTW while the spark plug was a nice medium brown color. I posted another thread on that.

Ah, you only replaced the needle, the part that needs to be swapped when switching to gravity feed is the valve seat, I understand that the gravity-fed seat has a larger hole in the center, Either way with the new carb that wouldn't be the problem. Still doesn't explain why it appears to be running rich.
There must be something else going on here because there really should be no reason you would have to jet it leaner than stock. You did say it was a basket case, maybe a plugged pipe/silencer?
