I took this apart expecting to see a lot of oil as I have seen everyone complain about... Just a light coating on the outer gears, what were visiable from notch... I pulled it apart and found a bunch af carbon looking particles??? I wonder if this is a rebuildable starter??? What do you think... (It will take some time to load all pics on my end...)

Remove the exhaust manifold and take the pic again.

You need to remove the carbon it will just fall off and get sucked back in the Engine and do damage.

When you take the pics also roll the piston up to TDC (Top Dead Center) so we can see the skirt.

That starter is worth fixing up.
Looks like the brushes may have failed.

The rebuild kit has the (edited) brush replacements and the part (pic 41) that holds it. its not that expensive.

OOPS: Thanks DC

Wash everything up and lets see the pitcures again. Your brushes are gone for sure but that is an easy fix. The comutator on the armature (PICT 37) looks wasted and you may need an armature. The rebuild kit usually contians the brushes, bushings, bearing and O rings.

Id be glad to rebuild this for you if you don't want to try it yourself. You supply the parts and I'll supply toss in my 25 years of alternator and starter rebuilding knowledge.

Thus the "DC" direct current...
I will probly try it myself, so I can learn how... Thanks for the offer though... If it whips my blonde headed arse I will send it to you...

nothing as clever as DC standing for direct current, just my intials....

Clean up all the parts and take a closer picture of the copper part of the armature and I should be able to tell if it is worth trying to save or if you'll need an armature.

Other then the brushes and armature everything else looks good.

You installed the new one?

The armature looks rough where the brushes ride I can turn it in the lathe to true it up if you need it turned...

I thought this was about helping other people out. Turbo posted a question about his starter. I provided a simple link to a rebuild.

I do think his starter is repairable.

Yeah I think we have it under control but thanks for the concern, you might check out the other 3-4 Pilot Odyssey boards perhaps you can help them...

The new starter is in the ody... I will have a lot of free time soon if the hurricane season kicks in with some good storms... I contract out to Fema and will have tons of time to work on little rebuilds like the tranny and starter just to make the day's go by... year of Katrina/Rita I spend 2 months stationed at various military bases/facilities with nothing to do but babysit a trailer...

New starter took a slight dump on me today at silver lake dunes... just a click is all I get??? I am will ing to bet (I Hope) that my battery was low, and is the culprit... turbo fan, radiator fan and lights and lots of starts is what it might be... It is an AGM batteery, so we will charge in AM

Well I charged up the battery and still just a click... each time I hit the button, click... just one, not several clicks.
I will try to find time to trouble shoot, but any and all tips would save me time, since I am in the road...
I will check the wire both ends, I already checked bolts to make sure tight... Is there a fuse somewhere???
Thanks...

Hold a volt meter on battery as you try to start it and see what voltage does.

Turbo, check your manual for a voltage drop test on the starter. This will tell you have a bad cable, cable end or starter relay contacts. I bet DC or "H" can walk you through it. Also be sure to check you ground connection it's as important as the positive connection. Cleaning up the old starter don't use anything that might damage the parts. and check your manual for test the parts using you ohm meter

I have traced the "click" to the starter relay thing...
