I went to Utah on ‘business’ and heard an earful about the ATV trail’s there. Apparently they have 50” trails and 60” trails. The wider trails are for UTVs (this is where Pilots fit). Apparently they are very good about allowing ATV’s to ride in to towns (it’s posted if allowed) and they are tolerant of ATVs riding in to and out of camps. But don’t push the rules, they will ticket you in a heart beat if you annoy them (I suspect it has something to do with letting ‘sinners’ contribute more to the local economy). Most of the people I talked to had a picture of the mormon temple in Salt Lake City hanging on the wall. All very nice people, put out a box of chocolates or made a cake for us. They could not have been more hospitable.
The trail heads do have posts set at 50” or 60” apart and the trails are well marked I was told (didn’t do any riding, temp was in the single digits). The area I was in was around Richfield up to Salt Lake City. The main trails seam to be around Richfield, look for the junction of I-70 and I-15. This is the area that the big ATV jamboree takes place every year. The best link I have found so far is:

The area I heard about would be the Piute and great western trails. I have not found a site with good maps yet, it seams there are lots of maps for sale though. I think a phone call to the area forest service would be in order. Need to find a good campground that has ATV access to the trails.
Right now I’m thinking a trip out west in ’09 to check this out with the family. I have the 4th week off (new thing starting this year, no holidays till the 4th seams like a long dry spell to me). Add a week of vacation and make a big circle, out to Utah, down to Tucson Az to visit the wife’s family and back via Little Sahara (it’s going to be hot there isn’t it). A year is a long ways off but …
