I live 12 miles from the dunes so I tend to go often. However my old ford POS truck I was using to haul the Pilot and now my quads has started to loose a front U-joint (1986 F150) If it was not reallllllllly rusty I might consider fixing the front end with all new U-joints and new ball joints and regrease the wheel bearing while I was at it. But the rust makes it look like its not worth it. (Rusty body and all the suspension) I will likely just sell the truck for whatever.
On top of that I am looking for for and at one ton flatbed 4x4 to haul my mini buggies I am setting up for. I found a decent deal on one I want to go look at but its a regular cab and I like extended or crew for the extra room! So still kinda looking.
The Pilot I had sold along with ALL the spare parts to a guy I met at Silver Lake who was from Northern Ohio. I gave him the link to this site. Dunno if he ever dropped in. He had three other pilots so he wanted all the parts.
For now I use the truck to get into the dunes (only need 2wd to get out to Test Hill where I park then ride my quads. No more duning the truck with a bad U-joint lol) I have a 1999 Polaris Scrambler 400 4x4 that I just went completely thru the
motor ((
Internal Combustion Engine ? )) (top and bottom end) and even as I type I need to get back out to the garage as I am getting ready to install the new bearings onto the crank and assemble the crankcase back together of a Polaris Trailblazer 400 2wd (same motor (( Internal Combustion Engine ? )) as the Scrambler). The new top ends sitting there waiting for the crank to be back together.
Once this motors back together and I know its right I am putting them up for sale to sell to help me buy motors for mini buggies (big sled fourstorkes or big street bike motors. CVT or clutch I can deal with either.) My bender will be full hydraulic on a stand soon. Then I can start building whats called a Panther (
http://www.desertkarts.com/ ) Not going right by the plans. Making MANY changes to improve the breed. Been tinkering with the new layout for far to long. Once the quad above is fixed its time to finish the bender stand (quite complicated. I'll post pics when its done.)
During my downtime (If I sell the quads till the buggies are ready) I may just bum around in the dunes in the one ton 4X4 helping out people broke down if I get that truck. I am also kinda peeking around for a Geo tracker 4x4 to use for a runabout and not eat a lot of gas.
But the tracker will not haul anything on its back. The one ton would haul a buggy on it out there no sweat (I like being Dune ready. Even being this close (12 miles from entrance) getting in with dune ready is sooooo much eaiser. Plus you got the gas and tools out there and if you do break down its easier to rescue the broke ride.
With some luck I can get both. A tracker for now and the 4x4 flatebed for later.
I can't lie. I miss the Pilot (When it was running good! lol) I used to drive around with one hand on the wheel and one on the rollbar just cause I could. A little dangerous I know but was fun to do. Usually passing people like that. So easy!
The Panther mini buggies should eclipse the Pilot in every way. At least that's the plan. I'm back to the garage now. Laterz
