That aluminum tank on the wife's ride, is that a replacement for the stock tank. or an extra tank that feeds into the stock tank???
I want to eventually put an extra tank on my pilot, but am not sure how to plumb it in so I have more range... Probly a little 3.5 gallon tank...

Turbo, I had the aux. aluminum tanks on both my Pilots. I used them simply to hold extra fuel, plumbed to drain into the main tank via a ball valve, thru a filter, then into the tank. Here are a couple of pics of one type of plumbing install.

I chose to use a large "T" rather than the small, copper "T" shown in the pics. Obviously the larger "T" drains the tank faster.

Autozone: look at the HELP line of parts. I think I used a 5/8"x3/8"x5/8" T connector (58 T picture)

Or try the larger 5/8"x5/8"x5/8" T connector (58 T 2 picture).

The valve is an ball-type air valve. See pics... available at Home Depot or Harbor Freight. (14 Ball Valve is a 1/4") (38 Ball Valve is a 3/8").

Hopefully this will help you

That's exactly how our three were originally plumbed, fittings are still there on two of them.

Thanks DP!!!
Now if I left the top tank open while the stock tank is full, would it over flow and get all over the place???

You can get an electric transfer valve at your local parts store for 25-30 bux last I checked. You could flip a switch and transfer fuel while you're driving.

I will look at that! I even thought of a pull cable routed to the front but I don't think I could shut it if I had to?
Maybe if I had a 3.5 gallon tank I could just wait till my fuel warning light comes on and then just dump the 3.5 gallons...

Glad to help!

Not sure if I understand the question...but if the aux tank was empty and you just filled the main, would it overflow? No, it would not back up the fill line. Flow is one way, from the aux tank, thru the ball valve to the stock Pilot tank.
If that's not your question, please restate and I'll see....

When you want to refill, just pop the top off the aux and main tanks, open the ball valve, fill the main till it's full, turn off the valve, recap the tanks and you're good to go. That's how I did it with mine.

I don't think the 3.5 gallon tank fits in between the rear roll tubes as well as the 5 gallon. But I think I've seen it done but the aux tank was mounted above the tubes. Not my preference, though.

One of the guys in my ride group has this, works great, but he does not use it will driving; always refills when he's stopped, so he can see if the fuel level in the main Pilot tank.

Another point, I just remembered, I used a non-vented gas cap. This kept the fuel from leaking out the top while driving. I've attached a rear-view shot of my '89 and another of my '90. Not sure if you can zoom in on it or not, but I replaced the fill cap that came with the tank with a leak-proof fill cap. Basically it's a plumbing reducer, a non-vented screw cap from NAPA and I used the screw insert from a junkyard fuel filler neck. It takes some work with a grinder to extract the screw insert, which is spot welded into the fuel filler neck, then i just push it into the top of the plumbing reducer. Works terrific, no fuel splashing out of the top of the tank. Costs about $25-$30 to make.

You can also see in the pic of the '90 Pilot (labeled as such), how I attached the tank to the roll tubes.

The stock cap, which comes with the aluminum tank, does a terrible sealing job. If you fill the tank, then drive, the fuel leaks out around the cap. My cap system stops this.

is that just a piece of rubber strapped to the tank? That was the biggest issue I had on the 5 gallon tank I have on the odyssey!!! Always leaked out the top... I finally got it to stop by using a big vent tube with a ball bearing type rollover valve...
I like your way of doing it as it appears easier!
I think what I am trying to determine is if the gas will biild up too much pressure and start leaking, but if I use a ventless cap on the aux tank like you have and put in a good vent system in the aux tank I wouldn't think it will expand to much...

I also have the radiator relocate kit so I might have enough room for 3.5... I believe the 3.5 is 8" round like the 5 gallon, just shorter left to right... will fit inside the rear roll bars better...
