All three of my FL350's are also like that 50% of the time.
Two of my machines shift very nice and the other one don't. The shifter is sticky on one. This could be several issues but it is very common to the Pilot and the oddy's. They also grind when you do this.
1) The dogs on the gears don't match until something is turning so that they can fall into position
2) The detent ball and spring are gummed up
3) You got rammy with the shifter and bent a shift fork
4) Cables out of adjustment
5) That's how they were from factory -- see #1
